NEWBURGH – John B. Tivnan, 85, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at Togus Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Montville, son of the late Walter V. Tivnan and Harriet (Boynton) Tivnan Jackson.

On April 6, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was a prisoner of war, and a recipient of the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged Nov. 29, 1945.

He was predeceased by his son, Irvine Terrance Tivnan. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Regis B. Tivnan; three sons, John D. Tivnan and his companion, Cora, of Fort Fairfield, David A. Tivnan and his wife, Mary, of New Bern, N.C., and Bernard B. Tivnan of Bunnell, Fla.; five stepchildren, Edward Phillips and his wife, Beverly, of Monmouth, James Phillips of Blaine, Thomas Phillips and his wife, Pamela, of Riverview, Fla., Michael Phillips and his wife, Pricilla, of Westfield and Rachel Forget and her husband, Adrien, of Old Town; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at Brookside Cemetery, Newburgh. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. Online guest book may be signed at:
