JONESPORT – Felix McCamey Davis III, 82, died Oct. 20, 2011, at home. He was born April 23, 1929, in Oklahoma City, son of Felix McCamey Davis Jr. and Lucile France Inlow.
As a child he lived in Missouri and Illinois, on Long Island, and graduated from high school in Seattle. He did his undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., followed by a Master of Theology degree from Union Theological Seminary, New York City. An ordained minister of United Church of Christ, he served Congregational churches in Springfield, Mass., and Kensington and Manchester, Conn. During this time he was active in the civil rights movement, youth programs and community outreach. He received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Andover-Newton Theological Seminary in pastoral counseling, and in 1976 become the founder and director for 20 years of Pastoral Counseling Center of Manchester, Inc., an outpatient mental health facility. House planning, building and architecture became a realized goal when he attended the Shelter Institution, Bath, in 1978. Here he learned how to construct an energy efficient, cost saving, open design home from the ground up to the roof. With his wife and their children, he designed and built their passive solar home in Andover, Conn. When he moved to Jonesport, in 1995, he designed and helped build their home, his daughter’s house and granddaughter’s cottage. A devoted sailor, Felix and his family spent many weekends at Roque Island. He then turned to building a powerboat. As an assistant to Doug Dodge, boat builder of Beal’s Island, they designed and built a wooden cruising lobster boat, which was launched in 2004. Community activities included serving on the board of directors of Community Health and Counseling Services for eight years with its main office in Bangor. He also served as chairperson of the board of directors of Sunrise Opportunities, Machias, for 10 years. A person of faith, Felix was an active member of Centre Street Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Machias. A delight for Felix was being a member of the church choir with pew jokes taking place often in the tenor section. Felix always had a book in his hands and more recently, a Kindle: history, science and exploration of the universe, theology, poetry and novels – from Dickens to Darwin’s Origin of Species.
A kind and gentle person, friends and family remember his positive attitude, love of life, laughter and gracious smile. He is survived by his wife, Gini King; children, Sarah Davis, Jennifer Davis, Rebecca Stevens, and Albie Harris and his wife, Julie; granddaughter, Gretchen Neubelt and great-granddaughter, Laela Michaud; and grandchildren, Hannah, Ethan and Grace Mauger, Alex and David Stevens, Joey and Claire Harris.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Centre Street Congregational Church, 9 Center St., Machias. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to Centre Street Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 265, Machias, ME 04654. Arrangements through Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home.
