NEWPORT – Gladys M. Merrill died Oct. 19, 2011, at her home after a period of ill health. Gladys was born in Etna, daughter of Charles B. and Gladys (Sylvester) Graves.

She was educated in Etna schools and was a graduate of Newport High School. She was married to Nathan Merrill for 43 years. He predeceased her May 31, 1990. Gladys worked as a clerk at A & P Store, Newport, for several years and also clerked at Bud’s Shop ‘n Save, Newport, for many years. Gladys loved the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and picking berries. She enjoyed braiding rugs, crocheting and sewing for her family and friends.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Nathan and Diana Merrill of Palmyra; two daughters and their husbands, Christine and William Maynard of Ellington, Conn., Barbara and Robert Canady of Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister and her husband, Maxine and Floyd Harding of Stetson; six grandchildren, Douglas, Jennifer, Ann, Amy, Julie and Jeremiah; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gladys’ request was that there be no public visitation and viewing. Public graveside services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, Oct 24, at Riverside Cemetery, Newport, with the Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport.
