WATERBORO, Maine — A 12-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the foot on Saturday, Maine’s Youth Deer Hunting Day. According to a press release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the boy was hunting with his uncle, Chad Whitehouse, 34, in Waterboro when he rested the barrel of a .243-caliber rifle on his right foot. The gun discharged after the boy was playing with its safety.
The boy was brought by ATV out of the woods to an ambulance, which transported him to an unidentified area hospital for treatment, according to the release. He was listed in good condition on Sunday evening.
Due to his age, the boy’s name is not being released. Maine Warden Service Sgt. Tim Spahr and Wardens Peter Herring, Seth Power and Rick LaFlamme assisted at the scene. MDIF&W had no further information as of Sunday evening.
