BANGOR – Pauline Cates, 89, wife of the late Guy A. Cates Sr., died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. She was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Rumford, daughter of the late Robert J. and Beryl (Given) McKenney Sr.

Pauline graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1940. She married her husband, Guy, July 5, 1942.

Pauline worked for W.T. Grant Co. and The American Optical Co., Bangor. She also worked as a payroll clerk for Penobscot Shoe Co., Old Town, and at the University of Maine, Orono. She retired as a teller from Merrill Trust Co./Bank of America, Orono.

Pauline was predeceased by her husband, her parents; two sisters, Virginia Lake and Madeline Carlson; and a brother, Arthur McKenney. She is survived by a son, Guy Cates Jr. of Greenfield; two daughters, Brenda Smart and Cheryl Clement, both of Milford; her grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer (Smart) Gavett of Orono, Michele (Smart) Madden and her husband, Eric, of Old Town, T.J. Smart and his wife, Kerry, of Waterville, Tracey (Clement) Morin and her husband, Kevin, of Standish and Heather Clement of Veazie; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Taylor, Cassandra, Ashleigh, Zachary, Hunter and Gabriella; a brother, Robert J. McKenney Jr. and his wife, Taeko, of Glastonbury, Conn.; a sister, Geraldine Barry of Scarborough; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to especially thank the nursing staff at Ross Manor for all the wonderful care they gave Pauline.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.

Burial will be afterward at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pauline’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Veilleux Funeral Home, Waterville.
