SEAL COVE – Douglas A. Gott, 77, died Nov. 5, 2011, at his residence with his family by his side. He was born April 4, 1934, in Bernard, the son of Ronald W. and Ava B. (Rumill) Gott.

Douglas graduated from Pemetic High School, Southwest Harbor. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. After his discharge from the service he attended Washington State Teachers College, Machias, graduating in 1962 with a degree in education. He taught school for 11 years as well as acting principal for the last nine years. He taught in Hartland and Stonington. During this time he coached Little League for the town of Tremont. In 1965 Douglas started his construction business and in the 1970s it became Doug Gott and Sons, Inc., where he worked up until September 2011. Douglas was a director of the former Union Trust Company Bank, a director of Wendell Gilley Museum, a member of Tremont Consolidated School Committee and a trustee for Mount Desert Island High School. He was also involved in American Legion, Eugene M. Norwood, Post No. 69, Southwest Harbor; and Mount Desert Island Lions Club. Along with his work Douglas’ favorite times involved his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had many good times with his family and friends.

Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Sylvia (Howard) Gott; three sons, Timothy Gott and wife, Beth, of Seal Cove, Thomas Gott and wife, Tammy, of Southwest Harbor and Peter Gott and wife, Jenny, of West Tremont; two brothers, Ronald Gott and wife, Barbara, of Bass Harbor and Stanley Gott and wife, Sandra, of Southwest Harbor; two sisters, Hazel Lunt and husband, Carroll, of Bass Harbor and Barbara Pettigrew and husband, Wyman, of Southwest Harbor; sister-in-law, Joan H. Robbins of Stonington; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Shelley and William; six great-grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Buchanan officiating. Interment will be at Hillrest Cemetery, West Tremont. Those who desire may make contributions in Douglas’ memory to Douglas A. Gott Scholarship Fund, care of Bar Harbor Bank and Trust Co., P.O.
