BUCKSPORT – Merlin B. Beal, 72, died Nov. 3, 2011, with his loving family by his side. He was born Oct. 8, 1939, in Wyman, son of Benjamin and Alverna (Worcester) Beal.
He was educated in the local schools of Wyman and Milbridge, and got his high school diploma while in the Army. Drafted in 1963, Merlin actively served until 1965 when he was honorably discharged as a specialist 4, Headquarters and Company A, 48th Medical Battalion, 2nd Armored Division in Fort Hood, Texas. Returning home to Wyman, Merlin lobster fished and became an apprentice with contractor Harry Pinkham. In 1968, he married his wife, Anne, and moved to Bucksport where he quickly found work as a carpenter. Merlin was a gifted carpenter, who built many homes, banks and schools, and loved remodeling and solving woodworking problems. He took great pride in his craftsmanship.
Merlin was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Stanley, Kendall, Willis and one infant brother. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Anne (Fickett); two daughters, Michelle and companion, Clark Cardimino, of Holden, Maria and husband, David Powers, of Levant; and a very special granddaughter, Lillianna Powers. Merlin also leaves behind his beloved Downeast family: a sister, Allegra and husband, Stanley Willey, of Cherryfield; brother, Larry Beal of Milbridge; many nieces and nephews.
An informal celebration of life will be held 1-3 p.m. Nov. 26 at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bangor Humane Society, 963B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
