INDIAN ISLAND – Hilda Mae (Mitchell) Gray, 93, passed away Nov. 5, 2011, at a Bangor area nursing home. Hilda was born Dec. 25, 1917, on Indian Island, the daughter of Theodore and Mildred (McKenney) Mitchell.
Hilda grew up on Indian Island. She attended Indian Island schools and then graduated from Old Town High School. She began working in shoe shops, and then later in life became a certified nurse’s aide and worked in home health care. As a lover of crafts, she enjoyed making anything that she could, including dolls and knitting shawls and afghans.
Hilda is survived by her by her five children, Clara Mitchell of Indian Island, Andrea “Angie” Mitchell of Portland, Barbara Beckwith of Buxton, Murray Mitchell of California and David Crosby of Massachusetts; 17 grandchildren, Angela Jarrett, Chad Luce, Clifford Beckwith, Craig Thorne, Daniel Mitchell, Danielle Freedom, Darren Mitchell, David Fulkerson, Dawn Beckwith, Donald Fulkerson, Joe Mitchell, Joseph Lee Mitchell, Kenny Beckwith, Michelle Mitchell, Renee Mitchell, Ryan Mitchell and Tammy Serra; many great-grandchildren; her brother, Gerry Mitchell of Alabama; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Hilda was predeceased by one son, Francis Mitchell.
