ELLSWORTH – Jyl Veinot Katsiaficas, wife, mother, sister, daughter-in-law and friend, passed away Nov. 6, 2011, in a hospital near their home in Virginia. With her husband and children at her side, she fought cancer bravely to spend as much time with them as possible. Although the earthly portion of her life ended much too soon, she leaves behind many friends and special memories. Jyl was born Jan. 28, 1954, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of John Kitchner Veinot and Madge Daye Veinot.

She succeeded in several different professions, but the one she valued most was her last, head teacher for special education students in Eastville, Va. She was a teacher and advocate striving to meet all their needs. Their affection for “Ms. Kat” was obvious when watching them interact. Jyl’s life was entirely about her family, she lived for them, and anyone who knew her, knew how important her family was to her. Mom lived life with a vibrancy and passion, which succeeds its longevity.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond C. Katsiaficas; and three children, Seth, Courtney and fiance, Ben, and Demetrios. She leaves two sisters, Candace and husband, Eric Lamberton, of Virginia and Jan Veinot of Maine; one brother, Jon Veinot of Maine; many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Those wishing to send memorial contributions may send them to Northhampton County Public Schools, 7207 Young St., Machipango, VA 23405, attention: Nancy Gosline, on behalf of the Special Education Department Special Education Student Fund in memory of “Ms. Kat.” Condolences may be expressed at
