CARMEL – Richard A. “RJ” Picken Jr., 14, died unexpectedly Nov. 7, 2011, as the result of an automobile accident in Carmel. He was born March 4, 1997, in Bangor, son of Richard A. Picken Sr. and Karen I. (Kinney) of Newport.
RJ was a student in the freshman class at Hermon High School, was very outgoing and enjoyed many things. He played sports and liked to race anything with a motor, including dirt bikes, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, lawn mowers and belt sanders. He also enjoyed riding in his mother’s TransAm, his grandfather’s 58 Chevy and going to Nicky’s Cruisin’ Diner. RJ was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time hunting and going to camp with his papa and was receptive to his guidance. He often wore his favorite color, camo, and was known to wear his boots year round. He was a loving child and an outstanding young man who was proud of knowing that he would soon become Jimmy’s stepbrother.
Surviving, in addition to his father, Richard Picken Sr. and his fiancee, Kathy McPhearson, of Carmel; and mother, Karen Kinney and her boyfriend, Bill Page, of Newport; are his brother, Steven Kinney and his wife, Michaelle, with whom he loved to spend time; grandparents, Keith Kinney and his girlfriend, Lillian Harmon, of Bangor, and Aaron and Hazel Picken of Hermon; loved being “Unkie RJ” to his niece and nephew, Jaymi and Baby Keith; many aunts and uncles including, Juanita and David Hall of Carmel, Robyn Kinney of Bangor, and Wendy “Stephanie” Lewis of Island Falls; cousins, Melissa and Christopher Hall; and special friend, Kailee Dunton of Carmel. He was predeceased by his grandmother, Sandra Kinney.
A service honoring RJ’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Hermon Baptist Church, Route 2, Hermon, with Pastor Garnett Chute and pastor Chuck Langbein, presiding. Arrangements by Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Condolences may be offered at
