FARMINGTON, Conn. – Kenneth M. Nelson Jr., 80, beloved father, brother, retired educator, passed unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, Conn. Ken was born and raised in Rockland, son of Kenneth M. Nelson Sr. and Hazel Bernice Staples.
After serving in the Army and aboard oil vessels for Exxon Mobil, Ken earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Maine, Orono. He taught math in both Connecticut and Maine high schools, before settling in East Millinocket, where he proudly raised his children with his wife and their mom, Alene Goodin Nelson. He assumed the principalship at Schenck High School and spent the vast majority of his professional career there. He spent endless time reaching out to those who sought help with his kindness and words of wisdom. He enjoyed his retirement with his dear partner, Jean Kelley, a retired teacher. Ken’s dream of traveling and continuing to learn was fulfilled as he and Jean enjoyed many hours of touring and visiting many places together.
Ken will be sadly missed by Jean; brother, Dexter Nelson of Nobleboro; three children and spouses, Jay and Denise Nelson of Caribou, Scott and Jody Nelson of Medway, and Steven and Michele Nelson Purdy of South Portland; grandchildren, Ariana and Hannah Nelson, Chad and Cory Nelson, and Lauren Purdy; many nieces and nephews.
Being a consummate educator, Ken donated his remains to the UConn medical teaching hospital. A memorial gathering may be scheduled at a later date. As Ken’s heart was always with helping others, donations can be sent to the Smile Train or the charity of your choice.
