GLENBURN – George G. Huntley died Nov. 24, 2011, at his home. He was born in Sherman, son of the late Winfield and Myra (Bryant) Huntley.
George grew up on a farm in Hampden with his father and mother, three brothers and three sisters. He was educated in the local schools and joined the Navy during World War II, serving as a gunner’s mate on four different ships in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, North Africa and South Pacific areas. He was awarded the following medals: World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, European-African Mid East Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal with one star and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He was a lifetime member of Whitcomb-Baker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4633, Hampden. After the war he married the love of his life, Dora Fournier. Together they had four children and six grandchildren, whom they loved and with whom they enjoyed many special times camping, snowmobiling, traveling and other activities. George enjoyed carpentry, built his first house in Hampden in 1955, and worked in major construction as a master electrician for 15 years before joining the engineering department of Eastern Maine Medical Center as chief electrician and advancing to the head of the department. He retired in 1987 and enjoyed his retirement very much hunting, fishing and traveling. George worked hard all of his life and was a good provider, as well as a good father. He loved to get together with his brothers, sisters and in-laws. He enjoyed playing cards and helping anybody that needed help. He also loved to go to Florida for a few months in the winter.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter; and a brother, Winfield of New Jersey. Surviving are the people who loved him and will miss him, including his wife of 61 years, Dora of Glenburn; three children, Gary Huntley of New York, Karen Buyno and Brenda Solomon, both of Glenburn; six grandchildren, Jason Moreau of Bangor, Danielle Huntley of New York, Melissa Moreau of Montreal, Christopher Huntley of New York, Stevie Applebee and Zoey Makahusz, both of Glenburn; three sisters, Laura Murphy of Hampden, Margaret Corey of Winterport and Althea Huntley of Bangor; and two brothers, Kenneth and Ira Huntley of Hampden.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where family and friends may visit and share memories 10 a.m. until the service begins. The Rev. Jerry Mick, pastor of Bangor Baptist Church, will preside, and burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. Friends are invited to gather immediately afterward at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Hampden.
