PATTEN – Colleen L. Schmidt-Mitchell, 79, went to be with the Lord Nov. 24, 2011.

She was born Dec. 5, 1931, in Sherman, daughter of Harold and Ethel (Whitehouse) Welch.

She graduated from Sherman High School and she was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, Stacyville. There she served others with meals and goodies and babysitting. She enjoyed being involved with children’s ministries such as teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school and Team Kid. She loved to travel and cook. She loved all animals and especially her pets. Her most favorite pastime was gardening; she had almost every square foot of her yard planted with something. She so enjoyed having tea parties with relatives and her special friends, Joan O’Roak and Dot McLellan. In recent weeks she and her previous husband Dean W. Mitchell had reconnected and planned to be remarried.

She is survived by their children and spouses, Eloise MacArthur and husband, Arthur, of Martinsburg, W.Va., Martha Landry and husband, Raymond, Wallace Mitchell and wife, Barbara, and Deanna Mitchell, all of Sherman. She leaves 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, whom she loved very much; a brother, John Welch and wife, Bea; and two sisters, Rosalie Johnson and husband, Mike, and Janice Lynch and husband, Ed.
