VAN BUREN – Thelma J. Porter, 86, died peacefully Nov. 26, 2011, at a Caribou hospital. She was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Siegas, New Brunswick, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Cyr) Thibodeau.
She proudly served in the Royal Canadian Army before working at Damariscotta and Presque Isle hospitals as a licensed practical nurse. Thelma left nursing to care for her parents and raise her family. Before her eyesight declined, she enjoyed making puzzles, and playing Canasta and board games with her family. Her favorite pastimes were attending local penny sales and finding treasures at garage sales. An accomplished cook, she will be
fondly remembered for her whoopie pies, homemade macaroni and dumplings. Family and friends would always have baked goods for their travel back home. She was a member of Gateway Baptist Church. She married Wallace Porter, Jan. 3, 1948, and they were together for 53 years before his death in 2001.
She is survived by her two sons, Gordon and his wife, Diane, of Van Buren and their children, Scott, Kay and Alex, and Norman and his wife, Marie, of Methuen, Mass., and their children, Julie, Stephanie, Jonathan and Samantha; and great-grandchildren Paige, Mackenzie, Nicholas, William and Agatha Rose. The family thanks the staff at Borderview Manor for the loving care they gave during her residence there.
At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are a service of Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. To leave online condolences, please visit
