DELAWARE, Ohio – Gregory T. “Greg” Benson, 61, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 29, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. He was born Dec. 7, 1949, in Boston, to the Rev. Thomas and Marteile (Butler) Benson.
Greg grew up in Bangor, graduating from Bangor High School in 1967. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he graduated from the University of Maine at Augusta with an associate degree in music, magna cum laude. In 1979, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to attend Ohio State University, graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Greg married Debra Drake, Oct. 20, 1989, and lived in Delaware, Ohio, ever since. Greg was a former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor and a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Delaware, Ohio. At the time of his death, he was working as the office manager for Audio Innovations and teaching guitar at Upper Arlington Music Academy. He had wonderful gifts for music and teaching, both young and old alike. Greg loved his family and playing his guitar for family gatherings. He enjoyed hiking in Maine and the Smoky Mountains, and biking with Debi, as well as vegetable and flower gardening. Greg loved life and lived it to the fullest, and has touched many lives during his lifetime.
In addition to his parents of Bangor and his wife, he is survived by a son, Charlie LeFevre; daughter, Christina and husband, Andre Saultz, all of Delaware, Ohio; grandchildren, Christopher, Andre and Dajah Saultz; sister, Ann Benson of Bangor; special friend, Meredith Allbright of Bangor; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 45 West Winter St., Delaware, Ohio, with Father Charles E. Wilson officiating. There will be a memorial committal service held in Maine at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in Greg’s memory to Benson Endowment Fund at Hospice of Eastern Maine Charities, P.O.
