BANGOR – The Rev. Wilbur R. Ellis, 89, died unexpectedly Nov. 17, 2011. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He earned a degree in engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. A proud U.S. Army World War II veteran, Pacific Front, he served also during the Korean War. He retired with the rank of major. He

served the Episcopal Church as pastor, most notably of historic St John’s Church, Cleveland, and Trinity Church, Castine. Wilbur “Bill” Ellis was an engaging man of lively character, most happy among others of even livelier character.

He was predeceased by wife, Nell Ellis; son, Richard B. Ellis; and grandchild, Adam Welch. He is survived by son, Paul G. Ellis; daughter, Susan B. Morris and husband, Michael; stepdaughter, Teresa Welch; grandchildren, Erin L. Morris, Melissa K. Davis and husband, Nicholas, Daniel, Alex and Jessica Welch; and great-grandchildren, Anna L. and Caleb A. Davis, Alyssa and Darren Welch.

A memorial will be held during summer 2012 in Castine. A service of Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
