PALMYRA – Dwight L. Stevenson, 54, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at his home. Dwight was born May 8, 1957, in Detroit, Mich., son of the late Lewis and Carrie (Stephenson) Stevenson.

He graduated high school in Detroit, Mich., and received his associate degree in fire science from Eastern Maine Community College. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy. Dwight gave his time and energy to serving his community. He was a dedicated firefighter for more than 25 years serving in Dover-Foxcroft and Detroit, Maine.

He was a member and instructor for both Central Maine Fire Attack School and Maine Fire Training and Education.

He is survived by his fiancee, Karen Bell of Palmyra and her parents, Daryl and Carol Bell, of Troy; his children, Dwight Nichols and wife, Eleasa, of Florida, Kia Nichols of Michigan, Jason Garret and wife, Le’Neshia, of Michigan, Brooke Stevenson of Dover-Foxcroft and Kendra Bell of Palmyra; his siblings, Stephanie Cotton and husband, Melvin, of Arkansas, Dwayne Stevenson and wife, Gloria, of Texas and Suzette Hollstine and husband, Richard, of Michigan; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many special friends. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Lewis; and a sister, Sharon. Dwight was so appreciative of the care and comfort he received from his family and from the hospice workers which allowed him to remain in his home during his illness.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Route 2, Palmyra, with the Rev. John Ring officiating. A gathering will be held at the church immediately after the service.

A last call ceremony will be presented by Detroit Fire Department en route to Rogers Cemetery, Rogers Road, Troy, where full military honors will be presented for his service to our country.
