ELLSWORTH – Jack, 72, passed away Dec. 19, 2011, after a brief battle with cancer with his family at his side. Jack was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Columbia Falls, son of Frank and Bessie (Reed) Hartford.
Jack worked at Morrison Chevrolet in 1962, Davis Beef Co. and High Street Sunoco driving a tow truck. Jack owned his own business known as Jack and Tom’s Towing in the 1980s, worked for RF Jordan’s and retired from Pine Tree Waste Disposal as a “sanitation engineer,” as he put it. Jack’s hobbies included working in the yard, feeding the birds, fishing, and watching the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. In recent times he enjoyed four-wheeling on the Down East Trail. Jack was an avid NASCAR fan with Jeff Gordon being his favorite driver.
Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois (Driscoll) Hartford; four children, Penny Brady and her husband, David, of Gouldsboro, Lloyd “Jay” Hartford of Florida, Scott Hartford and his wife, Shelly, of Missouri, Cathy Hartford and her friend, Nakia Murphy, of Ellsworth; special grandson, Jason Ingalls, who had been his little buddy since he was an infant and Jason’s fiancee, Joelle Strout; and his first great-grandchild due June 12. His other grandchildren include Brittany, Thomas, Ashlyn, Savannah, Christian, Cassandra, Berry, Wes, Joel and Tia; brother, Pete Hartford and his wife, Arlene, of Gouldsboro; the daughter/niece Jack never wanted, Joyce Wood; and his special buddy, Mark Carter. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Bessie (Reed) Hartford; brother, Norman “Pud” Hartford; and sister, Catherine Handy.
At his request there will be no funeral, however a celebration of life will be held 1-4 p.m. Dec. 26 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, corner of routes 1 and 184, Ellsworth.
