VERO BEACH, Fla., and SORRENTO – Joan Conroy Campbell, 87, passed away Dec. 16, 2011, surrounded by her family. Joanie was born in New York City and graduated from Briarcliff Junior College.
She married Jack Campbell and they had five children who she shepherded around the country as a military wife. A vivacious, athletic and inveterate optimist, she was never happier than when she was among friends coaxing her sometimes recalcitrant husband around a dance floor to the strains of Volare. Joanie volunteered many hours working with disabled children. She loved all sports and was very active in the tennis and golf programs at John’s Island. Her many treasured friendships reflect her oft-stated motto, “To have a friend you have to be a friend.” Her buoyant joie de vivre will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by sons, Michael and Barbara of Newburyport, Mass., and Chip and Molly of Tulsa, Okla.; daughters, Leslie Campbell of Winter Park, Fla., Lynn Campbell and Hugh Stevenson of Washington, D.C., and Leigh Ferguson and Gary of Vero Beach; five grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauly Carlisle of Bangor; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held in the summer of 2012 in Sorrento. A date will be announced at a later time. An online guest book is available at
