BANGOR, Maine — All Jeffrey Denis got for allegedly pointing a gun at a motel desk clerk four days before Christmas was $68.

Denis, 31, of Veazie made his first appearance Wednesday before a judge at the Penobscot Judicial Center on a charge of robbing the Fairfield Inn on Odlin Road in Bangor.

Superior Court Justice William Anderson on Wednesday set Denis’ bail at $50,000 cash.

Denis remained late Wednesday at the Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail. He was arrested Tuesday morning at a Veazie trailer park where he lives with his girlfriend and infant son.

Denis is charged with robbing the Fairfield Inn at gunpoint about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 21.

A tip led police to Denis’ girlfriend. She had told a women she had been in a drug treatment program with that Denis was responsible for the robbery, according to a police affidavit filed in court. The friend went to police.

Denis’ girlfriend told police that she had waited for him in a van in the parking lot behind the Howard Johnson motel, which is adjacent to the Fairfield Inn, but did not know he was going to rob the motel. The woman said she did not know he had taken a gun with him until after the robbery was over. She thought he was going to make a drug deal at the motel, as he had done in the past, the girlfriend told police.

The girlfriend said that Denis threw the gun out the window of the van somewhere on Interstate 95 but was not sure exactly where, the affidavit said.

Denis’ next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 4.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

    1. Sounds to me like she was an accessory either during or after the fact.  Hard to believe she didn’t know what was going down.

    2. Thats why we call them rats. They rat in exchange for not being charged themselves. The world needs rats and the rats must know they have options to come forward. More often then not the rat gets busted just at a lighter sentance.

  1. How many “really” believe he tossed the gun out the window…   He wasn’t being persued…so why would he do such a foolish thing like that…like changing a tire when you don’t have a flat…

  2. Rob $68 from the Bangor Fairfield Inn and your bail is set at $50,000…repeatedly threaten to kill your wife and children in Dexter and your bail is set at $2,000…Yeah, that seems about right…

  3. That devil may care ‘do and stubble, along with the neck tatt and circles around the eyes ought to combine with his record to make a great resume over the next 40 years. Can anybody say “unemployable”?

    1. He probably qualifies for all of Maine’s entitlement programs and now figures he can help himself to peoples money whenever he needs more.

  4. but officer all I was trying to do was getting enough money to get another tattoo and another bottle of dye, that’s all

    1. “Thanks for throwing the gun out the window honey. As my tat says I’ll love you “Always and a day”. Pass me the Manic Panic will ya sweetie?”

    1. When I read the original story my first thought was about how much money would actually be in the register at a hotel.

  5. Thanks to the woman in the drug treatment program, that tipped off the police… You are a real hero… I hope you are successful in your recovery, one day at a time.  Stick with the winners…!!!
