PORTLAND, Maine — El Mercado salad? $2.34. A cup of white chicken chili? $1.55.
Portland diners could get used to this. For a special lunch on what for many Portlanders will be their first workday of 2012, four city restaurants are pricing their menu items according to their calorie counts.
At a penny per calorie, the Jan. 3 promotion will cut some plate prices by more than half at Sebago Brewing Co., DiMillo’s On The Water, El Rayo Taqueria and Spartan Grill.
The Calories Count Lunch, running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the participating eateries, is being pitched by city officials as a way for Portland patrons to get a good start on New Year’s diet resolutions — and save a few bucks doing it.
The event also fits into the city’s larger campaign to promote the addition of more nutritional information on local restaurant menus, part of an effort to establish Maine’s largest city as a destination for the health conscious.
In March 2010, Portland was awarded $1.8 million in federal grant money to support initiatives to battle obesity. One program funded through the grant was Smart Meals for ME, which pays for Portland area restaurants to bring in a registered dietitian to analyze food selections, as well as revamp their menus to include calorie counts and other nutritional information.
Currently, 10 local restaurants have signed on for the dietitian-menu overhauls, with El Rayo Taqueria and Spartan Grill the latest to join. Another four eateries are in the queue, according to Bethany Sanborn of the city’s Health and Human Services Department’s Public Health Division.
Sanborn told the Bangor Daily News Wednesday nationwide studies have shown that “more than eight out of 10 Americans” support more nutritional menu labeling, and President Barack Obama’s 2010 federal health care law calls for interstate chain restaurants to eventually add more such information to their menus.
Sanborn said the city, through it’s reception of the wide-ranging Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant, opted to launch a program to give locally owned restaurants a chance to afford the menu changes as well.
“The assistance we got from the city made it easy for us to provide nutritional information to our diners,” said Michael Roylos, owner of Spartan Grill, in a statement. “People want to make informed choices about what they eat and thanks to Smart Meals for ME, they have plenty of items to choose from at the Spartan Grill.”
Sanborn said the city is still compiling sales data to more specifically quantify the impacts of its Smart Meals for ME program, but she said early returns suggest many people prefer to eat at establishments where they can easily track their calories.
“Our hope is that we can help make the healthy choice the easy choice,” she said. “If you want to eat out at one of the many great restaurants Portland is known for, we want to help make all the nutritional information available to you.”
According to a city announcement of the Calories Count Lunch promotion, “studies have found a link between eating out and higher caloric intakes. Nine out of 10 diners underestimate the calorie content of their meal by more than 600 calories, and consuming an extra 600 calories a week can lead to a weight gain of nine pounds a year.”
The city announcement goes on to note that about 58 percent of Cumberland County adults are obese or overweight, and that the state of Maine pays $350 million each year in “direct medical costs associated with obesity.”
So for at least one four-hour lunch period at four participating restaurants, diners will stand less of a risk of guessing wrong on how much they’re consuming.
That El Mercado salad at El Raya Taquerio? It normally costs $6.95, but it’s a 234-calorie plate, and at a penny per calorie, the promotion price will make it easy to remember. The cup of white chicken chili at Sebago Brewing Co. typically goes for $4.79, but it’s only 155 calories, and during the Calories Count Lunch, that means it’s a sub-$2 meal.
Spartan Grill’s felafel gyro drops from $6.75 to $5.18 during the temporary price change, and the whole wheat pasta and meatball plate at DiMillo’s will come down from $9 to $6.75 to match its calorie count.
“El Rayo is committed to providing flavorful and healthy options to our diners and our Calorie Count Lunch is a great way to draw attention to the fact that our diners don’t have to sacrifice taste when they give up calories,” said Cheryl Lewis, El Rayo chef, in a statement. “With most Americans eating a third of their calories out at restaurants, we at El Rayo feel it is our responsibility to procure and prepare local, sustainable food that tastes great and gives diners plenty of healthier, nutritional options.”

What an interesting and creative idea.
I do wish the article had also mentioned some menu offerings that would INCREASE in cost with this idea instead of just mentioning the ones that would decrease in cost. I can only imagine that things like pasta with alfredo sauce or even a salad with all the “fixings” (dressing, bacon, cheese, etc) would likely go up to the $12-$15 range, if not more. It’s good to know what your healthy choices are, but it’s probably a good idea to know about the unhealthy choices as well!
..which is NOT to say I think people shouldn’t eat things that may be ultimately “unhealthy”, but that they should make an informed choice about it. Like the difference between an iced coffee with skim milk and a iced heartattackachino (or whatever..you know the drinks I mean!). Some of those drinks pass the 1000 calorie mark!
So… this is basically just a marketing ploy promoted by restaurateurs of ethnic / organic type places to get people to try healthy stuff that they usually don’t bother with. That fine, whatever…. but the article could have treated people like adults in explaining this. I mean, the restaurants don’t actually care about “people eating healthy” per-se, they care about selling as much food as they can so as to earn as much profit as they can. That is all any business cares about, or should care about, which is a good thing so that the employees stay employed and the business can hire more employees. To suggest that restaurant owners care about healthy eating habits…. please. They all sell desserts, and high-calorie options, the local hippie outlets just wanted to steal away some business from the fast food, pizza, and Olive Garden type places. So only around 6 out of the 200 restaurants in the Portland area signed up for this program? That should help fat people trim down…. roll eyes. And also… It says “8 out of 10 Americans support healthier menus with more nutrition data”. That’s not true, it’s just that 8 out of 10 people POLLED who thought that was a good idea. Most typical average Americans would either ignore such a poll question in public, or hang up on such a poll phone call because they don’t care about the issue. The people who bother to participate in such a poll will obviously tend towards being people who care about nutritional nanny-state labeling issues and respond as such. And for the city of Portland to pretend that it cares about healthy eating… it does not. It does however care about getting some more of that sweet free federal money like the 1.8 million it got so it can filter it through the bureaucratic machine that is the union-run thunderdome known as city hall.
Calm down pumpkin. You can have a business with multiple concerns and goals on top of making a profit. There is nothing wrong with a restaurant wanting to promote healthy eating — especially when close to 2/3 of the state is overweight or obese and costs the state $350 million in medical costs. But ultimately, no one is stopping you from all you can eat soup and salad at Olive Garden and you are still free to steer clear of that scary “ethnic” food. So, quit your crying about the nanny state already.
Enjoyed your comment ;-) Poor guy needs a dose of happiness huh?
look at the caloric intake and especially the sodium and preservative intake in the soup and salad. NOT a healthy choice.
Tell you what- YOU look at the caloric intake and especially the sodium and preservative intake. I’ll continue to eat what I want to eat. Here’s an even better idea- Michelle Obama can mind her own business, eat what she wants (even if it tastes like baked styrofoam), feed her little kids that look like they have rickets what she wants to feed them, and leaves me the h*ll alone. Guess I’ll go get a Big Mac.
Wow, what a Negative Ned! You ought to meet my father; you two wouldn’t find anything good to say about Mother Theresa dedicating her life to help the desperately indigent in India. Try some meds, they helped him …somewhat! Good luck in the new year; perhaps a resolution to be a more optimistic, eh?
That should drop the price of lobster haddock scallops caviar.
The last thing this state needs is the lobster and scallops price to drop, how many fisherman joined the unemployed when lobster was 4.00 a pound? scary stuff in maine.
I meant the price the restaurant charges not the price at the dock of wholesale. the rest can take the hit if they want to charge by the calorie
but on the other hand people complain about gas & heating oil have no problem spending 10@ lb for scallops, or 5$ big mac
Local businesses getting creative to fight the mega-chains. Good for them.
Nice story, Koenig.
It’s nice, but there’s a lot more to eating healthy than just counting calories. Half the salads at Applebee’s have a higher calorie count than their bacon cheeseburger. It doesn’t mean they’re less healthy, just that they consist of more food. Encouraging people to zero in on calorie counts does not automatically encourage a healthy diet.
True. But for the majority of those who are overweight, they are trying to cut calories. The processing and additives are what’s making Americans fat. Live in a foreign country and eat like the natives and you’ll lose weight. Went to China for 2 months, lost 20 lbs. Went to Peru for 3 weeks, lost 10 lbs. Never went hungry, just ate good quality foods; not fast food or processed food. Cheers!
i stopped drinking soda and lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. as a 5′ 11″ male i have been working hard to get back up to 150 without the sugar.
I guess that would put an end to the sampler platter at Applebees if I would have to pay $13 to $27 depending on what I order. And I guarantee the soup, salad and breadsticks isn’t going to be $7.95 endlessly. Probably tack on another $10 for the alfredo dipping sauce. Better that the chains don’t get involved – it would cost patrons more. How about that Nosh burger joint downtown Portland – wonder if the calories would send it over the $15 bucks for a burger and fries they already charge!
This seems like a good idea but a little misinformed. Low calorie doesn’t necessarily mean healthy and high calorie doesn’t mean unhealthy. There are way too many variables… maybe they should rethink this a little.
1.8 Million of Federal Grant Money? If I was an occupier
I would be screaming that 1.8M sure could be put to
better use feeding the poor and paying their college
tuition. Imagine all the 1.8Millions around the country
being wasted so restaurants can have calorie count lunches.
Our govt at it’s finest and spending …..foolishly.
I agree…………….so much of that useless spending going on and just keeps on going on!! That’s your Olympia Snowe giving money to the GOP business instead of giving them more of a tax break. Take a look at who supported this money
They need this initiative in some other places in Maine as well. It’d be nice to see a few other bigger cities jump on board and do something similiar so that all residents of Maine get a chance to see what the calorie count is in their meals while being able to save a few dollars.
This might sound like a good way to lose weight, but it sounds more like a dumb business move. This could probably backfire and drive the customers to the all-you-can-eat for one price restaurants.
I still miss Millar’s……………….
