LITCHFIELD, Maine — A man flying a powered parachute was left hanging on a tree limb more than 70 feet high for a while after a gust of wind blew him out of control.

Sixty-six-year-old John Beganny suffered cuts to his head and face on Sunday.

Police say he was flying a parachute powered by a large fan mounted to wheels and a seat in Litchfield. The crash happened about three miles from his home.

The Kennebec Journal reported Beganny hit the oak tree and was knocked out of the parachute’s seat.

  1. Whooooooa!!
    Hanging 70′ in a tree after a parachute accident ??  !!
No thanks, I’ll stick to my crossword puzzles for a hobby.
    Yikes.

  2. I’m glad this worked out for this pilot. These powered parcahutes etc. are lightly regulated compared to a small Cessna type plane. Go to the web site for USUA whcih represents ultralight and light sport avaiation. The rules for operating a craft of 254 pounds or less differs greatly from regular small aircraft, you don’t need a license for a single seat craft, but you do for a two seater .It’s suggested that you not fly one in winds over 15 mph or so. They look like a bunch of fun in the right hands, but could probably take down a  fairly good size plane if one flew into the wrong air space. A large flock of geese put a big  plane into the Hudson.

  3. Just curious, how’d he get down? Did he tumble 70 feet to the ground when he was knocked from the seat?????
