CHERRYFIELD, Maine — Treacherous driving conditions created by black ice on Blackwoods Road caused Tony Smith, 46, of Cherryfield to lose control of his Chevy pickup Monday evening, resulting in injuries that required him to be airlifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Maine State Police Sgt. Tim Tabbutt said Smith was eastbound on Route 182 when his truck spun out of control, left the roadway and struck an embankment near the highway’s intersection with Unionville Road. Tabbutt said neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the single-vehicle accident, which was reported at 5:41 p.m.
Smith was in fair condition Tuesday evening, according to an EMMC spokesperson.

Actually, it appears that an accident sent him to hospital; not black ice.
Speed must have been a factor. If his speed was zero he would not have lost control…since he would not have been moving.
Very thankful that this gentleman is recovering, it could have been a lot worse!
This is my uncle and he was taking a turn going 25 mph; when my father reached the scene, the roads were so bad you could barely walk on them, let alone drive. So, have some respect for a man who almost lost his life.
P.S. Studded snow tires are for snow, not ice.
