AUGUSTA, Maine — The Chelsea selectwoman accused of accepting kickbacks from a plowing contractor in exchange for getting him work with the town is working with federal prosecutors on a possible settlement.
Carole Swan, 53, has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated forgery; attempted theft from the town and improper compensation for services and is free on bail.
Swan and Attorney Leonard Sharon were in Kennebec County Superior Court on Wednesday for a hearing regarding pending state charges.
Sharon told the Kennebec Journal that he is hoping to come to an agreement with the federal prosecutor prior to any indictment being brought in federal court.
If federal charges are brought, state charges would be dismissed.
Swan was arrested in February.
