OLD TOWN, Maine — An Indian Island man who police say refused to sign a ticket and then elbowed one officer and hit a deputy while they were trying to handcuff him was arrested and charged with assault, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said Friday.

Raymond Chavaree, 52, was charged around 10:35 p.m. on New Year’s Eve with assault, refusing to submit to arrest, refusing to sign a summons and improper passing of a police vehicle, the lieutenant said.

Chavaree originally was stopped on Stillwater Avenue by Officer Christine McAvoy after he drove by and nearly sideswiped Officer Lee Miller, who was conducting a traffic stop, Smart said.

“He immediately started yelling at her, saying she had no right to pull him over,” the lieutenant said of Chavaree. “She requested another unit because of the way he was acting.”

McAvoy explained to Chavaree why she stopped him, and “he said it was her fault. He said he works for the phone company and they have to put out cones. We should have to do the same thing.”

When the officer brought over the ticket for him to sign, Chavaree refused, even though he was warned repeatedly that he would be arrested if he didn’t. He assumed a fighting stance when he got out of his truck, Smart said.

“He told her to ‘Bring it on. You’re going to be sorry,’” the lieutenant said reading from the report.

Deputy Ray Goodspeed of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department stopped by to help McAvoy. She was elbowed in the face while the two tried to restrain Chavaree. Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Paridy, who was off duty, and Miller then showed up, and Paridy also was hit by Chavaree in the struggle, Smart said.

The four officers “were able to get him secured in two sets of handcuffs,” Smart said.

Chavaree was placed in the back of McAvoy’s cruiser, and she took him to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. Neither McAvoy nor Paridy required medical attention.

  1. People are certainly getting more violent with police when something happens they don’t like. You can’t win in the end fighting with a cop. Stupid to try it.

  2. Wow. I expected to read about alcohol or something he was on. And…It amazes me that the first person an out-of-control man wants to strike is a female. What a coward.

Good luck inn jail with a police assault on your record.

  3. He’s a lineman for the county.
    and he drives the mainroad.
Searching in the sun for a cop to avoid.
She hears him screaming in the night.
She  can hear him through the whine.
    And the Indian Island lineman
has put his job on the line.

    1. How about as a Haiku instead:

      Lineman elbows cop
      Two pairs of handcuffs restrain
      Stupid angry man

    2. ahhhh…Glen Campbell…many a warm summer night I listened to him on my transitor radio…and then FM came out…and Jefferson Airplane turned into Jefferson Starship…..

  4. “I work for the phone company”……really genius?? When the law has you in a traffic stop and asks you to sign or blow in the little thingy, just do it or automatically expect the cuffs and a ride in the cruiser……Crazy…..

  5. There once was a chap from the island,
Who insisted that cops should use pylons
    While using this bluff
    He discovered handcuffs,
and suddenly the phone line went silent

  6. Good thing i didnt become a cop.  Hit me and when i got you back to the cell , the dense steel doors of the cell would surely ‘accidentally’  hit your fingers.

Take off on me? i would drop you.

Hmmmmmmmmmm?….. ,what’s the age limit to become a cop in Maine? Maybe i am not too late for a career change.
