PORTLAND, Maine — OccupyMaine protesters are planning to clean up their city park encampment as they await word on whether they will be able to stay in the park.

The group is holding a cleanup of Lincoln Park on Saturday and Sunday days after Portland officials asked members to clean up trash and debris and remove unoccupied tents and structures.

A small band of protesters continue to camp out even as other Occupy groups around the country fall by the wayside. Members say it’s important to continue protesting what they call the growing wealth disparity between the richest 1 percent and the remaining 99 percent.

OccupyMaine filed a lawsuit against the city after the City Council voted to evict campers from the park because of concerns about safety and sanitation.

  1. Who says there isn’t a Santa.  Seems as soon as Christmas came, the ocCUpiers had to get home to their parents basement and wait for Santa.

  2. You know whether you are protesting or not, if you are going to use a public area the least you can do before you leave is clean up a little.  I know people have jobs that pay for clean up of our public areas, but they aren’t meant to clean up entire camps.  What ever happened to carry in, carry out.

        1. You have to ask?
Take a good look at them, do some research and background checks.
Then do a little sleuthing, the Intel  is Very interesting.
My contacts have found two occupy suspects that deserve further investigation.
Fraudulently receiving funds/ benefits meant for the needy is a crime and will be stopped.
One by one.  I’m a patient hunter but it helps if others beat the brush.

  3. I can’t wait until they have to mow the grass once a week.  Either they can move or they can do more work than they’ve done in years.

  4. i figured a few of those cold nights would certainly cause them to shuffle along
….  Nights are brutal id imagine in a tent…

    1. That all depends on how prepared you are, though I suspect that most of them don’t know how to camp for the winter in the extremes.

  5. See I think the judicial system is smart on this one, saving time and money getting on to more important topics, they are probably keeping this on the back burner as long as they can anticipating the departure of the “OccuProCampers.”

  6. Despite the insults and ignorant protestations on this forum, the Occupiers are correct that it is
important to continue protesting the growing wealth disparity between the richest 1 percent and the remaining 99 percent.

This disparity is partially the result of bad tax and regulation policy but it is also largely the cause of the shrinking of our middle class and the worsening plight of our poor.  Until we reverse the legislation that makes this disparity grow, our financial crisis will continue to worsen.

The only people that should fear this idealistic group are the excessively greedy.

      1. Greed is a normal human condition.  Very few can honestly claim to be free of greed.

Excessive greed is an abnormal condition, a disease.  Like megalomania it damages all who come in contact with it.

Because of greed, we might desire to own a fancy new car when the old one works fine.  Because of excessive greed, some individuals want to control our government so the game is tilted unfairly to their advantage.  It is past time to reign in their destructive excesses.

        1. “. . greed is an abnormal condition, a disease.”
Since it’s a disease, you need to have more compassion for their condition.
Let them live their lives as they wish and stop with all the hate speech and discrimination at them.
          Think about it, Seriously.

          1. Great logic.  Lets leave the child molesters and serial killers and drunks and rapists alone too–after all, they’re sick too.  Just let ’em have their way like the megalomaniacs and other power hungry social deviants.  It’s just tough luck for the victims.   Yeah, right.

    1.   Like the man said “sometimes greed is good”. But I digress, read Ayn Rands Atlas Shrugged, that discribes the occupods thought pattren and goals.

    2. I don’t fear them, I loathe them as whiners who, if they spent the same amount of energy actually looking for a job, rather then sitting around telling us all how unfair life is and how it just isn’t right, blah-blah-blah, could find one.  If they want to live in third world conditions, let them go find a third world nation in which to live… never mind, we’re going to be a third world nation by the time Obama, et. all. are done.

  7. I walked through about a month ago. There were about 10 people there and the entire park was covered with tents. I did jury duty a few years ago. A lot of us took our lunches and ate in the park. Time to take back the park that belongs to all of us.

  8. Have you ever read the Ron Chernow book, House of Morgan: An American Banking Dynasty and the Rise of Modern Finance? While we probably disagree on some issues, based on your position here, I think you would find it very interesting.

  10. Lincoln Park is a despicable mess.  The campers should have been sent away after one night.  The City of Portland ordinances state that the parks are closed from 10 PM to 6 AM daily.  They also prohibit camping, littering, defacing public property, and creating nuisances.  The photo with this piece is from the beginning of the camp ou—notice the green leaves on the trees.  I go by this park several times a week and it is really trashed out.  TV news coverage earlier this week made it look like a dump, which it is.  The city spokesperson pointed out that next Spring the whole park will have to be re-seeded.  I’m sure there is other damage as well.  Who pays for that?
