BANGOR, Maine — The father of a 16-year-old girl desperately called the front desk of the Charles Inn on Thursday looking for his daughter, who had called him saying she was in trouble, and the clerk called the Bangor Police Department.
Police got the call at around 2:40 a.m. and found the girl, who had visible injuries to her face and neck, after knocking on a number of guest room doors, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.
Nikolas Raines, 19, a transient was later arrested and charged with two felonies and five other violations. The girl, who didn’t want to speak with police, was taken to the police station and picked up by one of her parents, Edwards said.
Raines showed up in the lobby of the downtown hotel while police were still there with the girl and spoke with Officer Kyle Pelkey, saying he heard they were investigating a domestic violence assault. When he was asked to step outside Raines refused and struggled with Pelkey and Officer Richard Polk, the sergeant said.
Raines began yelling and was given a disorderly conduct warning, but “he kept being disorderly” and was taken to the ground and handcuffed, Edwards said. Once he was secured, officers “did locate a black folding knife,” the sergeant said.
Polk took Raines, who cut his finger in the scuffle, to Eastern Maine Medical Center. As he was being discharged from the hospital, Raines learned he was going to jail and became upset, Edwards said.
“He kicked a hospital bed, driving it through the wall” and also injured a doctor in the temple and an attending nurse, the sergeant said.
Raines was charged with two counts of felony assault on an emergency medical care provider as well as two counts of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, refusing to submit to arrest and trafficking in dangerous knives.
He was taken to Penobscot County Jail where he remained at noontime Monday, a jail official said.
Raines has a history with police, according to prior court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. He was arrested at the age of 16 by Bangor police and charged with three felonies — aggravated criminal mischief, burglary of a motor vehicle and theft by unauthorized taking — for his role in a break-in at Webb’s RV Center on Hammond Street in early 2009. The judicial results of those juvenile charges are not known.
He also was convicted for marijuana possession in 2011 and was twice convicted of being a minor in possession of liquor, the BDN listings state.
Raines faces a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on each of the two felony assault charges.

The sentences are too short. We need to stop letting these people out of jail.

on CNN a teen in Indonesia got beaten and is facing 5 years in jail for stealing a pair of sandals. Bet he’ll learn his lesson. This scumbag has not and never will. Keep wasting taxpayers money and time of the police.
We read story after story in the BDN where a transient is the main character.Transient means, “Passing through or by a place with only a brief stay or sojourn.” If these folks are really ‘transients’s ‘are they not on there way to somewhere else? If they are, would we all be better off if we awarded some free bus tickets and $300.00 for a trip to anywhere but here? It certainly would cost us all less in court costs and jail time.
I wonder what the statute of limitations is on being described as a “transient?”

not all 16yr olds act like children, as you can see above, bdn has dug into this boys JUVINILE records, which i thought are supposed to be sealed, to bring to attention charges this guy got as a 16yr old himself. Numbers below 18 dont equal innocence.
