FREEPORT, Maine — The Greater Portland Council of Governments and the Windependence group that promotes wind energy are holding events this week to promote the idea of municipally owned wind power.

The council’s Jennifer Puser says the technology and ownership model represent a “perfect match for municipalities.” She says she looks forward to seeing projects get off the ground.

Experts from as far away as California and British Columbia will be participating in events Wednesday and Thursday in Freeport and Augusta.

Freeport’s event on Wednesday will be aimed at wind turbine installers, engineers, architects and others. Separate events Wednesday and Thursday in Augusta are being held in conjunction with the Maine Agricultural Trade Show. They’re aimed at farmers and others who’re interested in community wind.

  1. Info on the gross disparity of subsidies for green energy vs. traditional sources.Renewable Energy Subsidies Are 49 Times Greater Than Those For Fossil FuelPosted by Institute for Energy Research (IER) Jun 11th 2011 at 10:04 am in Economy, Energy |  The Congressional Research Service (CRS) recently performed two studies evaluating fossil fuel and renewable energy subsidies—one in April and one in May. From those studies, in 2009:Renewable energy subsidies were 49 times greater than fossil fuel subsidies when evaluated on a Btu (British thermal unit) basis of production. In other words, when making a comparison based on the amount of energy produced, renewable subsidies were 49 times greater than fossil fuel subsidies. On a straight amount-of-subsidy basis, renewable fuels received over 6 times more tax revenue dollars than fossil fuels received, as estimated by the Joint Tax Committee. Renewables received a 77 percent share of total federal energy incentives in 2009, while fossil fuels received a 13 percent share but produced more than 7 times the energy. http://bigpeace.com/ier/2011/0

    1. So is your solution to wait until gas is $10.00 a gallon before we try to break our dependency on oil?

      1. hasacluemaine : How long has “traditional” energy been being subsidized ?
Does the Energy Research (IER)  include the military costs like keep the Straits of Hormuz open
… in either blood or treasure ?

Can there be a level playing field with without equal support in terms of gross dollars already given to subsidize oil ?

It is not your fault, sure, but why are you opposed to correcting past abuses of the free market ?

    2. The operative word that you use is “renewable”.    How many times can you re-use a gallon of gas?    Or even natural gas?     Each time you re-use these energy’s you are getting your money back,   you aren’t  paying for pollution control, and the money stays in the State.  It’s not fowarded to speculators, corporations, and eventually towel heads.
And I’m sure someone from the oil industry had nothing to do with your link’s information? What do you think?

  2. To the best of my knowledge there has not been one windmill that has turned profit

I do not believe there would be any wind industry if not for the subsidies. Let American entrepreneurial ship take over and use the subsidies to help fund the educational system that will create some real entrepreneurs instead of these leeches sucking up free money for nothing.  They all seem to be related one way or another.
