LISBON, Maine — Several factors may have contributed to the death of a Lisbon man late Sunday when his home caught fire and burned into the early morning Monday, Lisbon Fire Chief Sean Galipeau said.

Richard A. Davis, 41, was able to call 911 at 11:53 p.m. but was unable to escape his mobile home at 5 Larry Drive, which is off Pinewoods Drive, according to Galipeau. Davis’ body was found in his bedroom. Galipeau said Davis died of smoke inhalation.

“The last we heard [from Davis] was that our dispatcher advised us that he told the occupant to actually exit the building,” said Galipeau Monday morning at the scene of the fire, which is part of a mobile home park. “Then the phone either hung up or went dead.”

Galipeau said he arrived a few minutes later to find the rear of the mobile home already consumed in flames and the rest of the home laden in thick, black smoke. The flames were so intense that firefighters from Lisbon, Lewiston, Durham and Topsham were forced to fight the blaze from outside for more than an hour before they could enter.

“I was pretty much certain that he was inside,” said Galipeau. “His primary mode of transportation, his bicycle, was leaned up against the house. We did know that he was not employed so there was no reason to believe he wasn’t there.”

Galipeau said Davis obtained 50 gallons of heating oil from the town’s general assistance fund at the beginning of last week, but the oil had apparently run out. Davis was using a space heater and an electric blanket to stay warm.

Galipeau said Davis’s pipes were frozen and that he might have been in the process of trying to thaw them. Davis also smoked cigarettes.

“With those factors and the amount of damage, it’s going to be deemed an undeterminable cause,” said the chief. “It’s not suspicious.”

A team of three fire marshal investigators were at the burned home Monday morning attempting to pinpoint the cause of the fire but left after determining that the damage was too severe. Galipeau said the fire likely started in a utility closet or in a nearby bathroom.

Davis also did not have any working smoke detectors. Last year, after a tragic fire on nearby Summer Street that claimed the lives of two young girls, members of the Lisbon Fire Department teamed up with an organization called Safe Kids USA to provide as many smoke detectors to Lisbon residents as possible — including in Davis’ neighborhood.

“He wasn’t home so basically we left a calling card and he failed to call us so that we could come and actually install a smoke detector,” said Galipeau. “This may or may not have been averted.”

Galipeau said Davis was a “collector” and had his home full of various materials, which could have been another contributor to his death.

“There was a lot of stuff in his trailer. With that, people have to understand that when you collect things, that’s fire load,” said Galipeau. “When fire starts to go it’s going to consume all of that fire load and that may hinder your process of getting out.”

But Davis’ biggest mistake may have been calling 911 instead of fleeing his burning home.

“The lesson is get out of the building. You can make that 911 call definitely outside the building,” said Galipeau. “There was also a cat involved and he may have returned to get the cat. If you leave a door open, typically pets will make their way out of the building. Taking the time to do that or gather your things, typically you won’t have enough time.”

According to Sue Adams, who lives across the street from Davis, he was a good neighbor and a good friend who struggled to make financial ends meet. As a recipient of Social Security disability income, he lived on just $700 a month, said Adams. Davis’s mother died in 2004 and his father died in September 2011. Davis was deeply religious and in the past year or so had gone with her to weekly services at the First United Pentecostal Church in Lewiston.

“He found a place to be,” said Adams. “He loves music. He loves Jesus. He was by himself and his cat was his life.”

Davis was very kind to Adams’ grandson, who often went to Davis’ house to play a drum set. Davis also taught the boy how to swim. Davis was going to help Adams move some of her belongings to a new residence Monday morning.

“He would give you the shirt off his back,” she said. “He was like a brother to me. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that he’s gone.”

This is the first fire death in Maine in 2012, according to a press release from Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland.

Christopher Cousins has worked as a journalist in Maine for more than 15 years and covered state government for numerous media organizations before joining the Bangor Daily News in 2009.

  1. Sad. I noticed how this little article was placed next to the one about Mainers turning to wood heat this winter. I don’t know how this particular fired started, but it serves as a reminder that wood heat  requires fire.

  2. example number one of budgetcuts in Lheap and mainecare . this man lost his life LePage take notice

    1. Why LePage …………………………. Step back to last fall when Obama said to cut LIHEAP by 50%!

      1. he is disabled that says enough . he may be a war veteran he may be mentally ill of physically ill diabetes

          1. If your comment is implying that ewersmith repeating a lie, he isn’t according to liheap.org.  Liheap funds originate with the federal government and Obama did in fact order a 50% cut.

          2. well both are guilty on this one . i know what he went through i am similar to him disabled aloner one cat feds only allowed 700 but for some reason someone enteres my name into some feul assistance pool my name was drawn, i get a full tank of oil until april. automatic delivery. i was lucky in that respect but because of the cost of oil i fell behind on others including property tax . i am in trouble there . i only make 700 like that guy made. doesnt go to far . i feel bad for him . i dont know if he has any family that cares for him . i have a brother and sister but sister doesnt even talk to me brother is florida has his life they are part owners of the house. they should help me with the taxes but they dont

          3. Talk to your town office. There is a form “Freedom from….., can’t remember the name of it. Ask them about it and tell them about your situation.

          4. You don’t “make” 700 a month, you are given that. In order to make it, you must earn or work for it.

          5. so toy know mainecoon??? how do you know she didn’t work her entire workable life??? how do you know she didn’t EARN it as you put it… ignorance becomes you, hopefully you don’t ever need help.

          6. So you do know them? Oh, sorry, toy know them, as you would say.  I won’t need help because I do not make one stupid decision after the other, which is how most people end up needing “help.”

      2. Obama was forced to make those cuts by Tea Party radicals in congress who, just like LePage, are known to blackmail, bully and threaten…like they did with the world economy.  It’s the Tea Party that is the problem.  They are incapable of seeing the consequences of their hatred fueled policies.  We don’t need that level of stupid in positions of power and political influence.

    2. Washington is to blame for this one, pretty sad the town could only give him 50 gallons….this is what is happening to us, towns, etc 50 gallons and we are just starting to exit January and come off a very cold weekend

    3. LIHEAP is a federally funded program. It has nothing to do with LePage. Pres. Obama and congress are responsible for cutting LIHEAP.   While Dale McCormick is giving out $1,000 bonuses and paying for massages, magicians and other perks, this poor man didn’t have enough LIHEAP assistance. Shame on McCormick and MSHA for thier misplaced priorities.

  3. I’m sorry for this man bad luck. This article reads that his pipes were frozen and he may have been in the process of ” Unthawing” them.  How does one ” unthaw” pipes. My guess is that he was trying to Thaw the frozen pipes.

    1. You beat me to it. It would be the weather that does the unthawing.

To bad, but he seems to have been a happy recluse who is now hopefully with his God.

  4. cutting liheap is not the answer . start by making the cuts at the top first starting with the white house and working down instead of starting at the bottom where most people have no where else to go.

  5. Hey Governor LePage!
I hope you feel good about this!  With the way you are cutting services to seniors and the disabled for fuel oil and medications and Mainecare, you are going to see a LOT more deaths attributable to loss of services because of YOUR administration! Yeah, signs saying Maine is open for business are a LOT more important than fuel oil, huh?

    Hey Prezydent Obambam!
YOU are responsible for this man’s death!  You take care of your wealthy, influential friends, Wall St, GM and SOLYNDRA by giving away The People’s money from taxes.  The result is that programs to help those in need are CUT so that people like this man suffer and die, trying to stay warm…  You and every other Democrat and Republican politician are going to be responsible for MANY more deaths throughout this nation while you ALL play politics instead of caring for the people of this nation.

  6. Glad it was mentioned to get out and then call 911.  That is what I wondered when I perused the story earlier this morning–if he would be alive if the actions were reversed.  If you don’t have a cell, at least get out and try to get to a neighbor or local phone.  That action alone will save your life.

  7. How awful.  And the cut in heating assistance around this state will probably result in more tragedies.   At one time people could afford heating oil.  When I moved here it was about $1 a gallon – now it’s almost $4 – and a decrease in jobs.  The rich oil barons are going to destroy our state.

  8. Such a sad story. I pray this is not just the first of more tragic stories about people trying to keep warm in this year of LIHEAP cuts. Each year it seems more people are falling behind economically and there is less funding for the poor. God rest this poor man’s soul.

  9. Ya! Read the article again!  It states that the man lived on disability. ” He was disabled”  That mean unable to work due to a physical or mental disability….  You don’t think society has an obligation to take care of people who can’t work and care for themselves….  What is wring with you….

    1. You don’t know if he can’t work.  I know many people who would qualify to be disabled, but manage to hold down a job.  I know one man with polio who only has the use of one arm, has one leg shorter than the other, but he has a regular job.  Sure, maybe he gets help from disability, I don’t know, but you are misguided to think everyone with a disability chooses to live this way.  If they do, it’s likely by thier own choice.

      Cigarettes are pricey these days.

      1. In no way is my comment above meant to detract from the fact that this is a very sad situation and my heart felt sympathy goes out to his family and friends

  10. some people are born with disabilities both developmentally and or physical which enable them from working .

  11. i think wilwhipple judging this man as a  failed state of dependancy is distasteful considering that he’s died a horrible death through a series of “possible” incidents whether in or out of his control. his current state of financial affairs should not matter, what should matter is the type of human he appeared to have been, helpful, caring, thoughtful and i’m sure many more great things. that’s what matters, many should take example. I’m sorry for the loss of your friend Ms. Adams and Godspeed Mr. Davis, you are cold and alone no more ♥

  12. Oil is almost 4.00 a gallon. How can people who live in cold climates be expected to pay that kind of money to heat their homes? Why is oil more expensive than gas? Heating oil is more crude than gas, it should be much cheaper, as it has always been in the past.  Some people are getting very rich on oil. I hope they read this article and see what their greed has caused.

  13. it is a crying shame that oil is no longer priced by supply and demand and quite franklly there is more supply than demand an it is the futures markets that drive the price and now people are dieing as a result. If our president really cared he would with an executive order suspend any and all oil or energy product from the futures markets in the us the use economy is driven by this market

  14. My boyfriend is Mr. Davis half brother none of the family members were notified I had to tell my boyfriend while he was at work on the phone that his brother had died before he heard it on the news and I would like to know why that happened I would like to know why his siblings were not notified and why I couldn’t be able to tell him in a more dignified manor or be there for him as he was told this was poorly handled they had no respect for Mr. Davis or his family to let this go straight to the news without contacting them first was cruel and heartless and they should all be deeply ashamed of how they had no humanity towards his family or his memory. And just so that the negative people on here will know he was disabled because of several medical issues including a rib bone that was malformed and partly in his spine, my God you should be ashamed of yourself have some respect for Mr. Davis even if you have no dignity of your own that gives you no right to judge someone who died in such a horrific way I hope you never have to go through a day like his family and I  have today if it hadn’t have been for my aunt telling my mother this morning I wouldn’t have been able to tell my boyfriend before him hearing it on the news death is never easy to deal with it’s painful and the last thing any of his family needs to see is someone making it all the more painful by trying to distort and disrespect his memory! We also don’t know if the reason he dialed 911 is if he may have been trapped by the fire that would be a very reasonable explanation as to why he called 911 first because no one knows where the fire originally started and at the moment to have try to find out what happened through the news isn’t helping and as I said the people who went along taking this story to the news before notifying the family should be deeply ashamed especially to make such an accusation with out knowing the truth when as I said Mr. Davis may have been trapped.

  16. Slash the services this disabled man needed, in order to force him into health? Are you nuts? As I recall, only Jesus was ever able to heal someone simply by telling him to get better NOW.

  17. The sad part of this, besides of a person dying, is that if our Congress was not owned by the oil companies they would control prices on heating oil. They control orange juice and pork bellies but not fuel?  Even LePage could step up and place a maximum price in the state for heating oil. Maybe if the oil wasn’t costing $950+  to  fill a tank (250 gal@ $3.80) , LIHEAP money would go farther and residents of the state wouln’t be so desparate for heat.  Oil companies are posting record profits, as in the billions. It would be great to see  ANY  state step up and place the controls needed. LePage is willing to bully the residents, I wish he would do the same to oil companies.

  18. We need control over the price of fuel, not more handouts.  If he could have afforded the fuel, this may have not happened.

  19. I hope for your sake that misfortune keeps driving by your house. It is much easier to judge others and preach that way.

  20. I may have missed it but I don’t see where they
say this fire actually started because of no oil.
The headline speculates but the article also
speculates that it could have been other factors
too. Maybe the man fell asleep smoking? Sounds
like they won’t know but it is easier and a much
better story to make it appear that the poor guy
died because he had no oil. It is a tragedy no
matter what the real cause was.

  21. Sad that he died, but don’t make it into propaganda for entitlement extension.  Instead of lack of heating oil being the cause as the headline says, maybe it was safety, maybe it was a faulty electrical system, maybe it was ….

  22. Did you know him?  He was disabled, living on 700 dollars a month and just got a whole 50 gallons of oil to try and heat a trailer.Obviously, thats not enough to do much of anything, and I’m guessing thats why this poor soul is dead. But,with your way of thinking,I’m sure he would be much better off if we would give another tax break for the rich, and maybe he could of been fortunate enough to get some “trickle down”!

    1. If you go through 50 gallons in a week, which is pretty much what the article says, you need to lower the thermostat a bit. I heat a 2800 sq ft house on 24 gallons a week.

      1. Hmm,lets see.Theres abot 20-24 weeks of heating in a season, and your heating 2800 sq ft with 500 gallons? The average home uses 1000-1200 gallons.Hard telling what an old drafty trailer would use,but this last week was also the coldest of the year.Anyway, far from the point.

        1. I think the fact that he burned through 50 gallons in a week is relevant. It just goes to show that people who are given stuff don’t take care of it, which is the problem with the entitlement society.
And learn some grammar before you try to assail me with your drivel.

          1. Wheres the grammatical error? Drivel? Your the one who says he should “take care” of 50 gallons of oil when it’s 5-10 below in an old trailer.

          2. Your instead of you’re, first of all. Second: abot is not a word. Third: Theres. Furthermore, the grammatical errors continue in your rebuttal. Bad form, sir.

          3. Boo hoo. You do know that it is impossible to live without a heart, so unless this is a robot typing, I must have one. It just doesn’t bleat like your liberal one does.

      2. really??? read your own comment, you heat a HOUSE, not a TRAILER…. HUGE difference in insulation and R factor….

        1. HUGE difference in size as well. You want people to believe that a 400 sq ft trailer, even if it has less insulation, is going to cost double to heat than a house that is 700% larger? And since when does every house have great insulation just because it’s a house and not a mobile rodent trap. And P.S. Insulation and R factor are the same thing, you can’t have one without the other.

    1.  well let’s see since you’ve misplaced your calculator and riding on the reality that most smokers smoke at least a pack a day and being conservative he may have smoked the cheap garbage smokes:  $6*30 (days per month) = $180; 180/$3.50 = 51 gallons.  point made.

  23. Any accidental loss of life is a tragedy; especially by fire. It sounds to me there were so many issues here of what ifs and if onlies.  50 gallons of oil in a week would be a lot in a mobilehome…he also potentially had frozen pipes he was unthawing from a draft under the trailer, he was a collector..making it more difficult for him to get out of the dwelling and/or increase the fire hazard with potentially flammable materials in the dwelling.  He had a cat he dearly loved he could have gone back for.  Too many unknowns to use his loss of life as an example of poor government care of the disabled.  He was obviously a kind person who will be missed.  Very sad situation.

  24. why does the fire chief have access to who in the town is applying for heating assistance?? further more how in the he** does the fact he recieved heating assistance play into the story?? sorry but seems a little belittleing (sp?) to me
