PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police confirmed Friday night that the U.S. Marshal’s Service shot a man on Mellen Street.

The man, whose name was not available late Friday night, reportedly was being sought by the federal officers. He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he was undergoing treatment for injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Portland police Lt. Bob Ridge said.

Attempts to reach a representative of the marshal’s service Friday night were not successful.

Ridge said that it wasn’t clear why the marshals were seeking the man.

“Well, we’ve heard a lot of talk,” he said, but as of 10 p.m. police were still working to determine what happened.

Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and detectives from the Portland Police Department were still at the scene of the shooting as of 10 p.m.

According to Ridge, the shooting took place about 5:30 p.m. in front of a building at 65 Mellen St.

“It happened outside in the street,” Ridge said.

Ridge said the FBI was investigating the shooting as a matter of protocol.

  1. praying for all involved any officer  thinks and reacts in micro seconds  any wrong doing has to be the suspect . Praying for suspect recovery as well as the truth  .

    1. Wow, what are you saying? What information did you get from this story that I did not get? Let’s see, no name, no address, no reason as to what he was doing and why the Feds were looking for him, and most of all what led up to the shooting, like did he have a gun, knife etc. But I’m glad you got all the behind info from some other place! As for me, if he did make threats to the officer that caused him to shoot, I say send the officer back to the range for not firing straight!

      1. Hmm, pretty good shooting, I’d say. Wounded and apprehended instead of shooting to kill. Over the last few years we have had quite a few that were shot to kill.

        1. I say if you have to pull your weapon to shoot someone, you shoot to kill! You never shoot to wound someone. you shoot to kill.

  2. Federal Marshals provide security in Federal Court Rooms. They also operate the holding facilities for remanded inmates in Federal Courts. They transport Federal Prisoners between Federal Prisons and transport them from Prisons and Jails where Federal Defendants on Remand are held pretrial and presentencing before Bureau of Prisons decides where the convicted person will spend his sentence. They also search for and apprehend people who have skipped Federal Pretrial Release, not reported to Federal Prison or those who have somehow escaped from Federal Custody, such as those who walk away from halfway houses.

      1. The information shows that the person shot was not some random guy that was being investigated or who was being served an arrest warrant. He is likely someone who has skipped on Federal Pretrial or Probation or someone who did not report to Federal Prison. That or he is considered to a very dangerous criminal or someone with a major criminal history.

        1. I was actually researching it when u first posted…… kinda feels like things are going crazy here in Maine these days

          1. yea know what you mean.

  3. a witness said that she came around the corner and theman was on the ground and the person who did the shooting was running off.  Why would a US Marshall shhot someone and not be on the scene when the witness came around the corner?

    1. I doubt very seriously it was unjustified, I am sure they are quit knowledgable of the media, paperwork, and scrutinization that would come upon them.

Is this the same US Marshall that was assaulted by the FBI  agent?

Ex-FBI agent gets 2 1/2 years for assault on marshal

A federal judge today sentenced retired FBI special agent Gary L. John
to 2 ½ years in prison for assaulting a U.S. marshal trying to place him
    under arrest.

John, formerly of 110 Post Rd., Westerly, had been on the lam for two
months, when U.S. marshals working with Rhode Island Sheriffs
Department, tracked him to Stratford, Conn., in December 2005. He was
wanted in Rhode Island at the time for allegedly violating orders
barring him from contacting his ex-wife and for failing to appear in
    court.

WAKEFIELD – A former FBI agent from Westerly has returned to prison
after a series of recent arrests for violating a court order to stay
    away from his ex-wife.

John served 15 months at the ACI for a criminal conviction of violating a
restraining order in March 2002. His suspended sentence and probation
from the conviction end in 2012.

According to court records, state police arrested John in February 2002

  5. Its a dangerous place, I’m thinking to myself, Mellen street is a dangerous place, but who should appear but 2 police officers, Thela hun gin jeet…Heat in the jungle…Wait a minute this is Portland Maine, the way life should be….

  6. “Well, we’ve heard a lot of talk,” he said, but as of 10 p.m. police were still working to determine what happened. What kind of Law Enforcement response is that???. If you are your departments spoksperson….give it to someone else. Here is a clue…talk to the man that was shot and if he isn’t not available then trust the word of a U.S. Marshall or that witnesses…jeshh

  7. The Feds need to haul LePage away for violating Federal law with his “Bully Cuts”….If Maine wants to cut a lot of “fat” from the budget they should elect a Gov that doesn’t look like he eats 6 meals a day…
