WARREN, Maine — A 60-year-old Warren woman faces up to 20 years in prison after she was charged Jan. 27 with accepting drugs imported from Florida with the intent to distribute.
Niraja Beram was charged with possession with intent to distribute oxycodone. She is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has filed a request to the U.S. District Court in Portland for a detention hearing. The hearing is set for Jan. 31.
According to an affidavit filed in federal court by U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Steven Galbadis, federal agents, armed with a search warrant, seized a U.S. Postal Service Express Mail package addressed to Beram that was on its way to Global Packing and Shipping in Camden. Inside the package were 257 30-milligram oxycodone pills, 30 8-milligram hydromorphone (Dilaudid) pills and 27 4-milligram hydromorphone pills according to the affidavit.
The agents then delivered the package to the store and Galbadis and another DEA agent waited for someone to pick it up.
Shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 26, Beram entered the store to pick up the package. The affidavit states that after she collected the package, she looked at the two agents and walked in the bathroom. An employee at the store told the agents that he could hear the package being opened in the bathroom. Beram came out of the bathroom, looked at the agents again and went back inside, at which time Galbadis followed her back inside and identified himself as a special agent for the DEA.
Beram admitted to the agents that she knew that there were pills in the package and that it was illegal, according to the affidavit. She told the agents that she did not sell the pills but simply placed them in a mailbox on her property for another person to collect. She said she was paid $400-$600 each time. She said she had sent money to individuals in Florida for the pills on other occasions.
Based on this information, Galbadis requested a criminal complaint be filed against Beram. U.S. Magistrate Judge John Rich III approved the issuance of the criminal complaint on Jan. 27.
The charge against Beram carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and a minimum of three years supervised release.

I’m going out on a limb here…..perhaps this lady is looseing her home, needs money for heat, food, medications or even medical treatment. Perhaps she gets her check once a month and it just doesn’t cover everything. It seems to me that there might be an underlying reason here.
I worked at a large local business for many years. One day this elderly lady came through my line. She was buying supplies to help her tend to her ailing husband of 63 years. She
passed me a fifty dollar bill and while shaking her head, she asked if she could ask me a question. This lady wasn’t 90 lbs and her face showed her worry and pain. She asked me if they would hire her as a door greeter because her and her husband’s retirements were not covering the bills and they were in the middle of a foreclosure. My eyes filled with tears and I just wanted to hug her. This is the great and all powerful US of A….THIS is not suppose to be happening!!!
