WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – James Patrick Mahoney Sr., 86, died peacefully Feb. 1, 2012, surrounded by his family at Williamsport Hospital, after a valiant fight with Parkinson’s disease. Born March 21, 1925, in Williamsport, Pa., he was the son of Charles T. and Elizabeth G. (Callanan) Mahoney.

His father was the first city fireman to be killed in the line of duty in the Hippodrone fire of 1927. He was married to Marjorie J. McLucas, April 29, 1950. James retired from Sylvania after 34 years of employment. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served in the South Pacific on the USS Belleau Wood. James was an avid Notre Dame fan and a former member of the Notre Dame Club, a member of American Legion Post 104, the Wheel Inn, and a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

In addition to his wife, surviving are his children, Sandra L. and Rich Hillegas of Montoursville, Pa., and James Jr. and Elizabeth D. Mahoney of Winterport; five grandchildren, Todd and Jessie Hillegas, Meghan and Joshua Maeulen, Erin and Thomas Smith, James P. Mahoney III, and Caitlin Mahoney; and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alexandra Maeulen, and Emma and Jackson Smith. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, the Rev. Charles J. Mahoney C.S.C., Robert F. Mahoney, Nellie Jones, Mary Margaret Sacriste and Reda M. Travitz.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., Williamsport, Pa. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Wildwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
