ORONO – Wanda J. Engler, 84, died Feb. 2, 2012, at a Bangor health care facility after battling Parkinson’s disease. She was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Bellwood, Pa., daughter of Samuel and Emma (Hostler) Hildebrand.
She graduated in 1948 from Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing, Indiana, Pa. On Jan. 20, 1951, she married William Lee Engler. She worked in Youngstown, Ohio, as a homemaker, nurse and as a nanny for her grandchildren. She was affectionately known to everyone as “Nana.” She moved to Maine in 2009 to be closer to her youngest granddaughter, Molly, of Orono.
Wanda was predeceased by her husband, Bill. She is survived by her four children, Patricia Engler of Conifer, Colo., William Engler and his wife, Wendy, of Minneapolis, David Engler of Canfield, Ohio, and Amy Engler Booth and her husband, John, of Orono; six grandchildren; sister, Thelma McWilliams; brother, Ralph Hildrebrand; nieces and nephews. The family thanks the staff at Maine Veterans Home, and especially Maria Eaton, for their compassionate care and support of our mother, and a very special thank you to the residents at Page Place, Orono, all of whom took an active interest in looking after and caring for “Nana.”
