LINCOLN – Robert C. “Bob” Weatherbee was born Oct. 12, 1928, to Robert and Hattie (Lane) Weatherbee in Lincoln. He passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family Feb. 4, 2012.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served for two years. He was a graduate of Mattanawcook Academy. He worked in the Lincoln Pulp & Paper Mill and The Great Northern Paper Company, Millinocket, as a licensed electrician for 41 years. Bob enjoyed playing sports in school and played baseball in the Marine Corps League. In 1952, Bob and his brother, Clarence started Little League Baseball in Lincoln. Bob continued to build this program for the next 18 years. He started refereeing basketball in 1949 and continued for 30 years with 28 of those years in the IAABO. Bob was one of the founders of Twilight Golf League and stayed active in the league for many years. He also participated in the Couples Club Bowling League, Maine State Rifle & Pistol Association, and Back Country Snow Mobile Club and helped establish the first snowmobile trails in the Lincoln area. He was the fifth charter member of Lincoln Maine Federal Credit Union. He was a member of the American Legion and a charter member of Lincoln Marine Corps League from whom he recently received a Life Member of Service to a Grateful Nation award. In his later years, Bob could be found relaxing at his hunting camp in Lowell, splitting his winter’s wood, and working in his garden. He took great enjoyment from sharing his plants and garden vegetables.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia (Laskey) Weatherbee; his daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Tim Murchison, Nadia and her husband, Terry Wotton, Noreen Weatherbee, and Roberta and her husband, Glen Dickinson; grandchildren, Jennifer and Edwin Cousins, Morgan Leighton, William and Sara Wotton, Robert Wotton and Megan Sinclair, Hannah and Eben Dickinson; great-grandchildren, Arianna and Alex Cousins, Tanner and Lily Wotton, Myka Wotton and Fae Mackechnie; in-laws, Lloyd Stevens, Kay Weatherbee, Henry and Doris Laskey, Tom Laskey and Carol, Harold “Buzz” and Donna Laskey, Doug and Louise Laskey, Shirley Folsom; and many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Hattie Weatherbee; sisters, Charlotte and her husband, Donald Patchell, Elaine and her husband, Erland West, Pauline and her husband, Gaylord Webster, and Priscilla Stevens; brothers, Clarence and his wife, Helen, Byron, James and his wife, Elcena, and John and his wife, Lorraine; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Sam and Grace Laskey; sisters-in-law, Mae Godin and Sandra Drennan; special niece, Noreen Kimball; and other very special people in his life, William and Ella Culbert, Vera and Milton James, and best friend, William Clark, who was killed in the Korean War.
Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Clay Funeral Home, Lincoln. The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at Lincoln Congregational Church, School Street, with the Rev. Michael Robinson officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather at the church social room after the service.
