PORTLAND, Maine — A grand jury in Maine has indicted a former podiatrist on drug distribution and health care fraud charges.

U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II said Thursday that 50-year-old John Perry, who now lives in Bridgton, is charged with 43 counts of distribution of a controlled substance, one count of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone and one count of health care fraud.

The indictment alleges that while working at Atlantic Foot and Ankle in Portland in 2009 and 2010, Perry wrote prescriptions with no medical purpose, traded prescriptions for cash and cocaine and made up patient charts to cover up his illegal prescriptions.

Perry’s attorney, Leonard Sharon of Auburn, said he will begin reviewing the evidence against his client. He said Perry’s arraignment is scheduled for Friday.

      1. Thanks for the info.  Saw on the news this morning that now doctors are lying to their patients, telling them “you’ll be all right” simply to get them to come back for more “testing.”  It’s a joke.  The fraud….pharmaceutical reps and people selling such things Zimmer knee replacements all kick back to the doc……….aghhh.  Well, they won’t get my kickback. I tell them what testing I want and when I want it, exercise and eat right.  To feed on a person’s fears and charge a kachillion for unnecessary CAT scans and MRIs………no wonder people don’t have insurance.

    1. Bring on National Healthcare, I’m sure all these problems won’t increase.  LMFAO  This type of stuff would be a daily occurance, sort of the way it is now with Medicare fraud

      1. You cant argue facts with that poster. Nutting was investigated and not charged with criminal activity. It should be very easy to understand. Uncle Drinky will suggest that Nutting likely paid a bribe to get out of trouble.

          1. If he was determined to have stolen the money he would have been charged right? People who are charged with embezzlement or fraud are not allowed to claim bankruptcy in order to escape criminal prosecution.

  2. We all know prescription drug abuse and the dealing of prescription drugs has become a huge issue. Those prescription drugs have had to get into the public somehow. For me, a major part of the problem has been people doing exactly what this doctor has been charged with. The first step in my mind is to clean up and clear out the MDs and medical professionals that are writing scripts for the sole purpose of putting narcotics into the hands of abusers and pill sellers.

  3. There’s trouble afoot for the poor doc.. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on.. Hope he saved some of his ill-gotten gains, otherwise we’ll be footing the bill.

  4. Did he also submit claims to insurance companies, MaineCare, Medicare? That would be more fraud charges.
