OXFORD, Maine — Firefighters extinguished the remains of a chicken coop fire just after 6 a.m. Thursday at 54 Mechanic Falls Road.

Capt. Shawn Cordwell of the Oxford Fire Department said it appears a heat lamp in the coop ignited the fire, which killed 11 of the 12 chickens in the coop.

Heat from the fire melted siding at the home of the coop’s owner, Tammy Exel, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading beyond the coop.

The Poland Fire Department assisted.

  1. As a small flock owner I would be devastated to loose most of my chickens in a fire. There have been many coop fires caused by heating lamps this year…tragic. So sorry for your loss.

  2. asplundhlr50 you are so RUDE!!!!!! That comment wasn’t even remotely funny!!!!!! The loss of this flock is heart breaking. The flock owner has lost his income and his friends. My Grand parents own a chicken farm. They loved and took excellent care of their chickens. Any worker caught mistreating was fired and removed that day. This was back in 1950 . I am very sorry for your loss. I know this won’t bring them back. I hope you can find comfort in the out pouring of support for you.

      1. My personal belief is:Not Only are you RUDE ,YOU are a in sensitive with a sub-human personality. Most of us do eat meat. Not all,Most. The manor of this flocks death is severely inhumane. Not to mention the emotional toll  this has put on the owner. Try to show some compassion if you are able too, that is……

  3. I am sorry for their loss, I hope the heating lamp is checked out for a defect in this case – it seem that there are lot of ‘heating lamp’ incidents in the last few years….
