BOOTHBAY – George Piers Gunn, D.M.D., passed away peacefully Feb. 8, 2012, with his family by his side. George was born April 14, 1923, in Greenville.
His family moved to Bangor, where he graduated from John Bapst High School, then the University of Maine and Tufts School of Dental Medicine. He then enrolled in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, where he served until after World War II. There, he met his future wife Audrey, an Army nurse. They returned to Bangor, where George opened a dental practice. He enjoyed his profession immensely, and retired after 42 years in dentistry. George was compassionate and kind to all his patients. He volunteered his services to the needy, elderly, and local Catholic clergy. Along with his good friend Dr. Howard Kominsky, they were instrumental in founding the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Maine at Bangor. For decades, he was an active member of the local Lions Club. He was an accomplished athlete in basketball and golf. Golf remained his passion throughout his life and he had many life-long friendships with the people he played with in Maine and Florida. Upon retirement George and Audrey summered in Maine at Holbrook Pond, and wintered in Ormond Beach, Fla. He was most happy when surrounded by good friends and family. A lover of dogs, there was always a canine companion included as part of the family.
He is survived by his son, David Gunn of Ormond Beach, Fla.; daughter, Cathy Gunn Hodgdon and Kevin Hodgdon of Boothbay; and son, Joseph Gunn and Debra Gunn of Holden.
A celebration of his life will be scheduled for later in the year. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 27 Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
