GARDINER, Maine — A new report says Maine had the sixth lowest automobile insurance premiums in the nation in 2009, the latest year for which national figures are available.

Maine Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa said Maine moved up from the No. 7 spot from the previous year in the annual report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The report tracks average costs associated with personal automobile insurance nationwide. It says Maine’s average yearly auto insurance premium in 2009 was $682, the lowest figure in New England.

  1. I assume our relative lack of urbanization has a lot to do with this.  I’d love to see what Mass. placing and rates.

  2. Is it any wonder that we have lower rates since we have one of the oldest (age) states in the country?  All of the smart kids get out when they can, and so we are left with a bunch of far flung rural geriatrics.  The insurance rates had better be low!

  3. This is really good for insurance customer to pay the lowest premium because now a days it become hard to pay high insurance premium because of continuously increasing expenses and shrinking budget Insurance depot

  4. Trying to find out which states ranked lower I googled and found different  articles showing Maine as having the second, third and fifth lowest rates, all in 2010 or 2011. I wonder how accurate the above article is.
