SANFORD, Maine — For about two hours Saturday, the national Republican presidential race came to York County.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Ron Paul made last-minute stops at the county GOP caucus in Sanford, each hoping to secure support ahead of the evening announcement about who would be declared the state’s winner.

Romney, on a small losing streak prior to the Maine caucuses, originally had not been expected to campaign here. However, with his march to the nomination stalled and Paul close on his heels in Maine, Romney spent Friday night in Maine and then appealed to voters on Saturday as well.

Paul, the only GOP candidate left who had yet to carry a state, had spent two days in Maine in late January before state Republicans began caucusing. He returned to Maine on Saturday with the hope that its voters might deliver him his elusive first win.

With no other primaries or caucuses on the horizon until later this month, all eyes were on Maine. Senate Majority Leader Jonathan Courtney of Springvale, a Romney supporter, summed it up by saying it was “a great day to be a Republican in York County.”

In the end, Romney edged Paul by a 39-36 percent vote in the nonbinding presidential preference poll announced late Saturday by the Maine Republican Party.

That result ultimately could change when delegates are chosen for the state convention in Maine, but the last-minute campaign by the two candidates showed how much each wanted a win, even a nonbinding win.

The visits to Sanford by Romney and Paul did not overlap, but each made pleas for support, albeit in slightly different ways.

“People keep saying ‘well, when are you going to win a state?’ I hope it’s today,” Paul told reporters as he greeted caucus-goers at the Sanford High School auditorium. “I’m told we have a good chance, but I don’t make predictions.”

Paul shook hands and signed autographs for about 15 minutes before leaving quietly. He made stops later in the day in Lewiston and New Gloucester.

Romney, who arrived in Sanford more than a half hour after Paul departed, did not address potential voters individually and did not take questions from the media. Instead, he addressed the entire caucus audience for about seven minutes and outlined why he believes he’s the only Republican candidate who can beat President Barack Obama in November.

“I’m concerned about the direction this country’s being taken by President Obama and his friends,” he said to several hundred York County Republicans. “I know this president wants to transform America; I want to restore to America the principles that made us the nation that we are.”

Romney quickly ran through his lists of goals if elected. First, he said, was to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which he called “Obamacare.” Second, he pledged “to reverse all the Obama era efforts to attack religion,” a reference to the president’s recent effort to require religiously affiliated employers to include contraception in their health insurance plans. The president reversed his stance on Friday. Finally, Romney said he would bring America’s economy back from the failed efforts led by Obama.

“I want to be your nominee,” he said. “I want to beat President Obama. I believe I’m the one person in this race that actually can.”

Although four candidates are still vying for the GOP nomination, Maine was expected to be a race between Romney and Paul.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have not campaigned in Maine and don’t appear to have a groundswell of support.

Most caucus-goers in York County seemed to have their mind made up by Saturday morning and the Sanford auditorium appeared to be evenly divided between Romney supporters and Paul supporters, with a sprinkle of Santorum and Gingrich backers.

Courtney said he believes Romney is the strongest candidate to beat Obama, but he gave credit to Paul and to Paul’s passionate supporters for helping to rally the Republican party.

Rep. Aaron Libby, a first-time GOP lawmaker from Waterboro, was among the Paul supporters. Libby said he thinks Paul is the only candidate who doesn’t represent the status quo and the only Republican who is serious about cutting government spending.

Libby and Courtney agreed that whoever the Republican nominee is, the party will rally behind him because its ultimate goal is to ensure Obama is denied a second term.

    1. Rick Santorum?  Really?  A man who in the year 2012 in a secular America wants to ban contraception for women?  That every sex act must be a try for a child and if you can’t have children you shouldn’t get married or have sex?  A man who wants to bring his form of Theocracy to America just like the Taliban?

      Really?

      1. And you’re supporting Obama, a monster who refused to support legislation that provided protection to third-trimester babies who survived abortions?

        How noble of you.

        1. I agree. You assumed I am an Obama supporter. I am not, for the reason you have stated. That was it for me. BUT there is NO ONE in the Republican nomination circus that I want for president and I certainly don’t want Rick Santorum, America’s Taliban chief.

I’ll write someone’s name in. Pluto’s not a bad choice.

          1. well if thats what turned you away from obama, why wouldnt you at least consider ron paul, the only candidate who is AGAINST the patriot act and NDAA?

          2. There is a lot to like about Ron Paul and I agree with him on reducing our military interventions and I support his position against the Patriot Act and the NDAA. But I disagree with him on his economic stance (the Austrian economic model) and I fear that Roe v Wade will go away. I don’t like the idea of him nominating supreme court justices (so important in the next few years). I believe there is a war on women in this country right now – something younger women who do not remember the fight of the 60’s that gained so much for women and they better wake up soon – and I don’t trust his ultra-conservative stance on this. I also find him very difficult to listen to and I think he’s too old. His systematic decimation of the federal government (yes, there are problems with the fed govt) would also be too extreme.

          3. I certainly dislike Crony Capitalism that’s run amok and the Oligarchy which controls this country now. I don’t know…..I will look deeper into Ron Paul’s platform and I do thank the people who have written to me about it. I truly believe we live in a police state now, with indefinite detention without trial the most heinous thing to ever happen to America. And I believe the Republicans and Democrats are cut from the basic same cloth and just want to protect their wealth (in Congress I mean) and make up the rules to only serve themselves.

But I worry about the disabled, the elderly, the poor and women who should have the right to control their own bodies and not be told by old men (and young – Santorum) what they can and cannot do in their own lives. I don’t think Paul will really help any of them. And I think his son is an absolute, embarrassing nutcase. I abhor Ayn Rand and all she stands for and this father-son team seem to think she’s the cat’s meow. So there’s a lot I worry about with a Ron Paul presidency.

          4. After studying up more on Paul today, here is the one reason he should not be president. He does not believe in global warming (climate change – call it what you will, it is happening) and thinks it is a ‘hoax’.

Don’t have to study no more.

        2. If we would have elected Ron Paul in 2008, we would be out of Afghanistan and Guantanamo in addition to Iraq. The Patriot Act would be no more and the NDAA Bill that violates the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments of the Constitution would have been vetoed. We would not have incurred tremendous debt in order to provide bailouts and corporate welfare. The Federal Reserve might not be continuing to steal money from us by debasing our currency. Ron Paul would be protecting our freedoms, making us fiscally responsible, and be trying to fix our monetary system right now.

      2. Rick Santorum does not support a ban on contraception. He does oppose government-run health plans paying for them with taxpayer money and borrowed money.

        1. He believes birth control is harmful to women and society. He believes he should be able to control women’s bodies. As president, I’m sure those views would become part and parcel of his administration through legislative efforts and executive orders.

He’s very open about it. Just go on Youtube and it’s very easy to find.

          1. Good for you. Feel free to write in rutabaga. Give it a first name and include its address. We’ve never had a compete vegetable for a president, though we came close to it in 2001-2009. There were a few near misses in the 19th century too.

        2. Rick is so damn crazy you do not even have to get to contraception. Just the fact that he believes it was good to have the nuclear scientist in Iran killed was enough for me to see that he has no respect for the rule of law and for human life.

  1. Mitt is little more than a mega rich flip flopping manikin that shows up in Maine wearing his illegal lawn care worker’s pants and a child’s sweater because he thinks that’s the best way to appeal to average Mainers. Pathetic! If he wins it all it will be a testimony to what money alone can buy you in America.

    1. Am I the only one that finds Sick Rantorum really, really creepy? He gives me the willies .. not quite  like Jeffery dahmer .. but let’s just say I would pick a plane seat serveral seats removed and on the opposite aisle.

    2. What, are you loosing your touch or have the Left Wing Liberals just stop paying you. Pretty sad when you revert to copy and pasting your own posts from previous stories. You should probably start paying closer attention to detain and you might have noticed that Ron Paul is wearing the same V-neck sweater. I also don’t think it is very polite of you the stero-type people as illegals just because they were blue-jeans. Really not something a liberal would do you know, but then liberals always do have a talent for twisting things to suit them at any given moment.

    3. The only argument that all of the Romney stooges can come up with to try to convice people to vote for him is the asinine claim that “Ron Paul can’t win.” You obviously have a real strong candidate there guys.

  2. ABO Anybody But Obama
    ABR Anybody But Romney

Anybody that dosent openly oppose (press release needed) the Obama supported Quimby National Park

And so far,,,, Ron Paul seems to be “afraid” of Quimby

Man-Up Ron, stop looking like Frank Perdue, put out a press release opposing the Obama-Quimby Park http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5cqIVWJXYs

      1. well i think what you mean is the park may or may not be coming, regardless of who is in the white house.

      2. Thats right Dorothy, click you heels three times and wish it to come true…..

FYI, each day more and more Quimby supporters are jumping ship

  3. Romney gets the big picture under the headline. Ron Paul’s photo is dinky and dead last at the bottom even below Chris Burton, a Ron Paul supporter. Nope… no bias at the Bangor Daily. Sounds petty? No. Not when you consider how the media has been treating Ron like a  leper. How about a side by side split photo of both Romney and Paul? Nah…. Just more of the same.  Bias reporting in favor of Romney. Ron Paul 2o12!!

    1. Their bias is against all Republicans.   Of the many pictures I seen of Romney, that was one if not the most UNFLATTERING pic of him ! If they had a worst pic of Paul, I’m sure they would have used it if it didn;t seem too over the top!     It’s subtle, but the pics along with choice of words for headlines, it’s consistent and it works.   PBS / MPBN are masters of liberal influence by choosing favored articles, reports .

        1. Do you really think people vote according to instinct – our reptile brain?  And to think I’ve always though our votes ought to reflect our thinking – the product of  disciplined, rational brains. But if you’re right, no wonder it often turns out badly.

      1. For the future of America you had better be wrong. If you think that our salvation as a country lies in Romney, Obama or Gingrich you better step back and do a second take. If you want more of the same, tax and spend way beyond our means vote for any of the above three. But when the SHTF you will have no one to blame but yourself. Unfortunately, I will be along for the ride as well. And I won’t vote for just another talking head. Political party means nothing. Principals are everything. Research, listen and follow your candidates. You may find that everything that the media is feeding you is not entirely true. I believe that the opposite is true. That the majority of what I am fed from our major media sources is cooked, distorted and skewed. Go ahead and blast away.  I have 15.3 trillion reasons to vote out the status quo.

      2. How does Mitt, Newt or Rick win? They will not get Ron Paul’s votes because we do not like them any better than Obama. They will not repeal the Patriot Act, NDAA or end the wars. They will not end the War on Drugs or even stop the deficit. Dr. Paul is the only candidate that can beat Obama  because he appeals to Independents and anti war Democrats. Keep in mind most of the non violent drug offenders that Dr. Paul will pardon are minorities. The media has stopped calling Dr. Paul a racist because minorities realize he is the only candidate addressing the inequity in the judicial system that targets them. Obama will only be defeated by someone with broad appeal. Mitt, Newt or Rick can not win but Dr. Paul can.

        1. If you actually believe this, then I think it is time to get out of your echo chamber and talk to others where I believe you will get a much needed brush with reality.

          1.  no its true,  most ron paul supporters will not support liberal romney, neoconservative gingrich, or crazy theocrat santorum.  id rather waste my vote on an independent than help america destroy itself even more.

  4. I understand that the Republicans allow same day registration for participating in their presidential caucuses.  They oppose same day registration in general elections.  Ironic?

      1. They live, work and study in Maine for the majority of the year (at least) and some plan to make it their future home — yet they’re just “Maine citizen for a day”? No wonder so many leave in droves after graduation.

      2. I’m a little puzzled.  This doesn’t add up.  This post seems to mean that  “Maine citizens for a day students” can’t vote even after they show a Maine driver’s license.  Is that what you meant?

      1. Tim, you missed the point.  The Republicans didn’t get what they wanted, but it is what they wanted.  They evidently have no problem with good Republicans showing up to register and vote in their caucuses, but they are not so inclined to extend that confidence to “others”.

  5. CNN Poll: Ron Paul tied with President Obama.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul continues to enjoy a new found surge in popularity,
and according to a CNN/ORC poll released Monday,
he is statistically tied with President Barack Obama.
in a hypothetical November match up.

AND…. most media would like to convince us Dr. PAUL can not win…………. BALONEY….

Once in a great while.. principled.. dedicated.. honest people DO WIN. “This could be one of those times”.

          1. Some of Maine’s caucuses were postponed and not held today. State Republican Chairman Charlie Webster said, “Their results will not be factored in. The absent votes will not be factored into this announcement after the fact.”

Romney allegedly beat Ron Paul by 194 votes in Maine. The caucuses that were postponed are in areas where Ron Paul has tremendous support. The political powers simply could not stomach letting Ron Paul win and having that be on the minds of voters for 2 weeks before the next states vote. They have even decided that the results from the future caucuses will not even be factored into the count. I thought we lived in democracy? The people of Maine need to really raise a stink about this!

          2. “Won” Maine? No, winning by vote fraud and manipulation of the process is not really winning. Romney and the corrupt Republican Party can shove that win where the sun don’t shine. Do you really think a Republican candidate can win against Obama without the support of Dr. Paul’s movement? Do you think we will support Newt, Rick or Mitt after what the Republican Party has done to Dr. Paul? Dream on…

      1. No matter how many times you say that, it does not make it true. This election there will be two choices. Dr. Paul or Obama. voting for the three stooges, newt, Mitt or Rick is wasting your vote. Dr. Paul’s supporters will not vote for them so they can not win. To us they are no better than Obama.

      1. i find the opposite to be true, those that disregard mainstream media propaganda and actually look into ron paul themselves the more they find to like him.

      2. All of the evidence says otherwise. The most informed voters support Ron Paul. He polls better against Obama than any of the other candidates and he has been ignored and marginalized. The more people become informed, the more he will start to pull away from Obama. Romney cannot beat Obama and the other two can’t even give him a challenge!

        1. No, it doesn’t. You people are constantly complaining and blaming someone else for your weak candidates. If Paul is so amazing and everyone just loves him so dearly, he’d be winning some primaries and caucuses. For the group who is constantly screeching about “personal responsibility” you sure do seem to have trouble accepting responsibility for yourselves.

          1. Yes it does; look at the general election numbers.

            http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ron-paul-tied-obama-two-235500600.html

Furthermore, Ron Paul Democrats will make Reagan Democrats look like a drop in the bucket. Ron Paul came in second in the Republican New Hampshire primary but did you know that he ALSO came in second in the Democrat Primary there??? Romney can’t get near the Independent and Democrat votes that Ron Paul can, which is why Romney has ZERO chance against Obama in the general election.

            http://www.democratsforronpaul.com/

          2. GOP leaders do not want to elect the strongest person against Obama because of 2 things: He wants to take on the FED and he wants to take on the war profiteers (the most powerful people in this country). They are ensuring that Obama gets another 4 years.

          3. Romney did not win Maine. The Republican party called off the vote when Romney was ahead, knowing that the rest of the votes, if counted, would have put Dr. Paul ahead. It is not a win it is vote fraud.

          4.  Or considering the lack of attention Paul has gotten from the media, he just might be attractive to a lot more folks than you think.  He does come across as a kook and he needs more than 30 seconds to present his ideas.

Actually, I’m somewhat surprised that more or any of the “liberal” folks who post here haven’t supported Paul’s libertarian principles.

      1. ya unlike creating a whole army of new enemies will do right?  all those civilians we accidently kill over there, and the people fighting what they see as american imperialism, surely that doesnt create enemies that are going to want to retaliate right?

      2. “The Israeli media does a great job of exacerbating the threat — and that’s the picture that most Israelis see,” said Edo Konrad, 24, of Tel Aviv. “We think of Iran as a genocidal, anti-Semitic regime and forget that outside of Israel, the largest Jewish community in the Middle East actually lives in Iran.”

        http://www.rgj.com/usatoday/article/52949682

If Iran ever used a nuke on another country they know full well that their entire country and all of the people in it would be nuked out of existence! They will NOT do that and anyone who thinks otherwise is easily manipulated by war profiteers and is a damned fool! Furthermore, no country is dumb enough to give a terrorist a nuke because we would immediately be able to identify the nuclear signature from it, which would tell us exactly where it came from and what facility it was produced at. Consequently, that country would then cease to exist as well!

Let us maintain diplomatic relations, economic relations, an impenetrable defense, and the power to destroy the world for now. Technology and nukes have changed the entire game. Can you name ANY countries with nuclear weapons that have been invaded by another country? Hitler sure as heck would not have invaded Poland if the Polish had nukes back then! Military expansionism is a complete waste of resources and an archaic idea in today’s world! It is sad that the only candidate smart enough to realize this and change with the times is the oldest one.

  6. They all look weird!—And I will be so damn glad when you can turn on the TV and not see those faces looking out at all of us with those “lying eyes”!!—Dosen’t matter what party they belong to, just sick of seeing them!

  7. Yep, that’s the chipmunk-looking gazilionaire I’d like for a national leader………

    Corporations first

    Holy crap

  8. Is it bias you see in PBS or are they just telling like it is?  I’ve heard some serious investigative  journalism on both PBS and MPBN.  I have to say, the don’t tend to sensationalize the news as most outlets tend to.

  9. They should have a reality show for these G.O.P. clowns, ” Who is most unfit for office”, or “Billionaiare V.S. Billionaire”, or my favorite “Lies Across America- the campaign trail”.

  10. We all know that Mitt Romney is an un-American corporate shill with an agenda to force RomneyCare, subvert the 2nd Amendment, hurt the American worker and support the Obama-Quimby National Park, but why is Ron Paul afraid to say he is against Quimby….?
