HOULTON, Maine — A Canadian man who held police at bay for nine hours last March by threatening to blow up a Cyr Bus Line bus will serve more than a year in jail on terrorizing and assault charges related to the incident.
Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said late this week that Daniel Thomas Maccabee, 51, of Madison, Wisc., was sentenced in Aroostook County Superior Court in December.
Maccabee was indicted on one count of terrorizing and three counts of assault by the Aroostook County grand jury last spring, but one count of assault was dropped before sentencing. He was ordered to serve 10 months in prison on the terrorizing charge, along with 60 days in jail on each assault count. He also was fined $300 on each assault count.
Maccabee has remained at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton since the incident.
He was arrested at the end of the standoff in front of Irving Big Stop restaurant on March 30, 2011.
Maccabee, who is a Canadian citizen, was en route to Houlton from Bangor when he told the bus driver that he wanted to go to the Canadian border and ordered him not to stop in Houlton, according to police.
He told the driver, Archie Rivers of Old Town, that he had a bomb and showed him what appeared to be a detonator that had three wires connected to it.
The wires went from the device to a bulge under his jacket and shirt.
Rivers refused and pulled the bus into the Houlton restaurant, which is the bus line’s customary depot, at around 8:30 p.m. He said last year that he believed the bomb was fake. Passengers on the bus later praised Rivers for how he handled the situation and comforted them while they waited for the standoff to end.
Maccabee allowed the six passengers and the driver to leave the vehicle but assaulted three female victims before he let them go. He punched one woman, kicked another and grabbed the third by the hair before they were allowed off the bus.
One victim said she had almost gotten off the bus when Maccabee grabbed her by the hair and said, “Maybe I should keep you for safekeeping.” He then tossed her by the hair into the parking lot.
Members of the Houlton police and the Maine State Police tactical team negotiated with Maccabee. Just before police were preparing to force him off the bus with gas, he gave himself up. No explosive devices were found.
The device which Maccabee was holding that resembled a detonator turned out to be a Nintendo Wii game system controller that was connected with an intercom wire and duct tape to a spiral bound notebook.
Maccabee later told police that his original plan was to force the bus to the Houlton border port of entry, show the bomb to Canadian immigration authorities and demand asylum at the Israeli consulate in Ottawa.
Maccabee indicated that once he arrived there, he would give himself up.
Maccabee underwent a competency evaluation which detected no issues, according to the district attorney’s office.

I think he should get much longer than “more than a year”……….he must a bit unstable, huh?…….has he had any rehabilitation?…..what says he won’t succeed in his next attempt to harm people?………I don’t always understand the legal system…..
He was sentenced under our penal system for what he did. His rehabilitation is a separate matter. While inmates may get some level of mental health assistance in prison, our system does not put people in prison to fix them, it is a penalty.
I dont understand how Homeland Security did not take over this case and this man was not prosecuted in Federal Court.
They’re too busy spying on Americans with “Don’t Tread On Me” bumperstickers.
It appears so. They are also heavily involved in making it difficult for American Citizens to bring thier lawfully married spouses from other countries to the US. Meanwhile the illegal alien problem is a joke.
I dont have a bumpersticker but I do have the dashboard flag.
I agree that the crime doesn’t fit the sentence. He deserves at least five years confinement and immediate deportation back to Canada. And, kudos to Cyr’s Bus Line’s driver. No wonder the company has been operation for 100 yearrs.
Archie Rivers, (who’s known as the singing bus driver), handled the situation very well!! You can hear him singing on the Peakes Hill Lodge Country Jam show on Sat. nights.
I used to work there at Big Stop, and Archie rocks! Kudos Archie!
Way to Go Archie!
Hey, wait a minute!
Is that Bill Clinton?
sure looks like he would have looked after being with monica.
I did reply (nothing Bad) but Big Brother didn’t like what I said so it has to clear the 1984 Dept. before they’ll release it.
He hates women, especially. He is a terrorist. Is there not a way to change the sentence, and keep him in jail.
“Maccabee underwent a competency evaluation which detected no issues, according to the district attorney’s office.”
Ummmm…. I beg to differ.
lmao..they found no issues with this guy when they examined him? who did the examination, Bozo the clown doctor?
$600 and 12 months for what he did? I guess it really is “Catch and Release”.
Get back to me when you get hold of and view the new documentary called A NOBLE LIE which details the evidence for taxpayer funded FBI agents creating the Oklahoma City bombing
be interested in your sentencing options.
Hey this perp could have been a FBI agent , eh?

He’s been incarcerated more than 10 months. He probably gets the same good time credit somebody serving a sentence at the jail would get. So that means his sentence is very close to “time already served”. He probably made a deal that includes immediate deportation when the county releases him.
You posted a photo of this geek. well little may he be. But its obvious his mental stability shur isn’t up to par. Well this looks like the type that should be with a monitoring bracelet and kept an eye on for ever. And I guess the Canadian tax payer will foot the bill for this one. Or is he still state side on our account.
scamming i see
He only is getting a year??
