BANGOR, Maine — A Mars Hill man and Canadian woman are facing federal drug charges after being arrested last week at the Bridgewater Port of Entry, north of Houlton.

Caleb Jewett, 20, and Patricia Smith, 24, of Perth Andover, New Brunswick, were arrested early Friday after methamphetamine was found hidden in the door panels of their vehicle, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court.

They are being held without bail. Detention hearings to determine under what conditions they might be released are expected to be held next week.

The pair was referred for a secondary inspection about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on a tip that they were involved in cross-border drug smuggling, according to court documents.

With the help of narcotics-detection canine Dorsta, 786 methamphetamine pills were found hidden in the rear doors on the passenger and driver’s side, according to the complaint.

Jewett allegedly admitted that the pills were his, that he paid $3 each for them and obtained them through Smith in Canada. He also said that he hid them in the door panels, according to the complaint.

Smith and Jewett are charged with importation of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

If convicted, each faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $5 million.

In addition, Smith could be prohibited from re-entering the U.S.

  1. Can they get anymore stupid? give them the 40 years and  5 million dollar fine, I want to be on that jury……please

      1. bailee you dont owe anyone on this site an apology! I am sorry that you had to read ellsworth15s ignorant post! pay no mind to those people they clearly dont know Caleb! Keep your head up girlie!

    1. let me guess your a perfect little social butterfly that does no wrong.  if you only knew the person you are calling stupid.  just what the world needs more perfect people as yourself.  Get to know someone before you judge yes they did wrong but people other than yourself mess up and will learn from there mistakes and can tell you he will become a way better person.  when i go to the hearing it would be perfect if you got on that jury wouldnt be hard figuring out which jury member you are. You would be the stuck up, insecure, perfect angel, with her wings flapping as fast as they can so you big butt can be sure to be above and beyond everyone like you think u are.

  2. How does a kid, just 2 years removed from High school get involved with someone from another country and start transporting things (drugs) across the border? Pen pals?Foreign exchange student?Facebook?  Interesting the myriad of stories when it comes to drugs and whatnot. Now this kid has made a truly bad life decision. Is it his first? Last?

  3. So, can I assume that the all wonderful Canadian system is a little loose with their prescriptions, too?  HMMMM?

  4. This isn’t her first time doing this she has been doing it for years now it’s about time they got her.  I bet she isn’t laughing anymore is she!!!

  5. “Detention hearings to determine under what conditions they might be released are expected to be held next week” Lol That’s so funny. ” Ok Ms. Smith if you promise to show up for court next week you’re  free to go…” “Ooo Qui Qui merci bou cu”

    1. Nope 6 months and probation is min. I hope they use the time to re-evaluate how they want to live life.  I am a recovering meth user 17 years clean in April from that same Northern Maine town. I had to move outta that little town but I did it!

      1. Congratulations!  I didn’t realize meth went back that far.  Sometimes being naive is a good thing, I guess.  You did the right thing for yourself.  Keep it up.  :)

  6. Drug addiction is a hard battle and I hope they are both able to get the help they need and turn their lives around.  My heart goes out to their families and friends.

    1. funny thing is, he’s still going to come out ontop of all of you badmouthing him. the kid is damn good at everything he does and always has been. this was a bad move, no questions asked but it gives him time to reflect on his past decisions and ways to improve on his life from here on out. everyone should learn to think before they speak especially without knowing who they’re talking about

      1. He is a very smart kid and by the way he already graduated college. Another person who likes to talk when they don’t know what they are talking about. You just judge a book by its cover all the time, is it cause you can’t read the actual book. I feel bad do those big words get the best of you. I’m sure if you would like my 4 year old will loan you one of her books. If your lucky she might even read it to you.

  7. Time to not feel bad good kid bad kid it don’t matter it obviously is not his first rodeo. I mean really he didn’t have 1 or 10 he had over 700 to bring into maine and resell to other 20 yr olds and 15 yr olds and who really knows who all. He deserves what he gets and so does she he wasn’t feeding his own addiction he was encouraging others and we all need to remember he was 20 so most likely the ones hes encouraging are also young like him…..Just my opinion

  8. Forty years and a $5 million fine, wow.  They didn’t kill anyone, of hurt anyone or damage any property, yet the sentence could be forty years in prison and a $5million fine?

This evidently is all commercial business.  Where are these young people going to get the money and who will pay for the incarceration?

     Anyone?

  9. No they didn’t damage any property and I guess you might say they didn’t kill anyone BUT with the amount they and I do mean THEY tried to bring into the US was not for personal useThey have hurt alot of people I’m sure their family aren’t happy or proud and the people they supplied aren’t feeling to good either.I have said it before this isn’t the first time but now it will be the last time. I really don’t care what happens to them I hope they sit in PRISON and figure that out. What you should be asking yourself is how many kids are now hooked on this crap and what is going to happen to them and who is going to have to pick up the tab for them.

  10. I am not going to preach to anyone, I am just going to say my peace and move on.  These young people both knew what they were doing.  If this was their first time or if they had been doing it for a long time the outcome will be the same.  They will both get punishment and it will follow them for the rest of their lives.  I hope that their addictions are treated and they come back to their families clean and sober.  I can only imagine what their bodies have gone through these past days.  The world today is a scary place for young people and there are many things that can draw a young person to the darker side of life.  Many well raised and well meaning children have made very poor choices and found themselves in some very bad places.  Remember that these two are some ones child..sister..brother etc..the world might be a better place if we all cared more about each other and less about pointing fingers…someday that finger might well point right back at you.

    1. Thanks. couldnt of been put any better.  they might be the only two who actually serve time in jail and have to live with there actions for the rest of there lives but they are not the only two that have to live and go through it.  If you knew his family they are great people and go out of there way to help people.

  11. I know this family and they are WONDERFUL, GIVING people whom I happen to care about a whole lot! Yes poor decisions were made but doesnt everyone make their fair share of poor decisions at 20?!? I know that I sure did! I will continue to support Caleb and his entire family during this time! Dont judge someone you dont know anything about totally not cool!
