FARMINGTON, Maine — Farmington police are investigating an attempted home invasion in which the residents managed to chase away two men trying to break into their home.

David Nelson III and his girlfriend awoke to someone knocking on their front door at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Nelson told the Morning Sentinel he yelled out that he was calling police. He said he saw a man with a rifle.

The men tried to pry open the front door, then smashed a window.

As the men tried to climb through the window, Nelson and his girlfriend, Holly Norton, screamed that police were on the way.

The men fled.

Police say one of the men cut his hand on the broken window and police are comparing DNA from his blood to a criminal DNA database.

  1. What’s happening in Franklin County? I don’t ever remember hearing about lots of  hard core crime over in the Farmington area over the years. The person that murdered the elderly grandmother was from out of state, who are rest of these people?

    1. Nothing is happening any more in Franklin county then ever before or any other county. The media outlets, particularly this one, just always want to be the first to break the story and finally have the technology to do so. Most of what you read has been going on for years it is just now the news outlets have the capability to bring it to you “real time”. My advice, get a “tabloid filter” for your PC because most of what you will read is just local garbage to keep people fired up about reading headlines. It works too, there will be 300 comments on a story about a couple of kids stealing a candy bar…earth shattering.

      1. More is happening due to the epidemic of drug taking idiots. On drugs, people lose their conscience and only know the need for more. How many drug stores were the object of robberies years ago? Now to become a pharmacist, one needs to take courses in self defense and use of handguns. That may seem like a joke, but, in truth, it is not a joke—soon the pharmacies will employ armed guards.

        1. No they wont, they will just be inside bullet proof glass. The pharmacists will be happier when that happens, not so much for the added security, but for the fact they wont have to breathe the gross air all the sick people blow at them while they complain their meds aren’t ready. Drug epidemic is on the rise but faster than that is the press epidemic to report every little incident in the world. Tabloid media is all it is and it’s real time.

  2. hurry with that DNA results before they do more to folks in their own homes, which most likely has already happened, after they left this house.

  3. It appears a person needs to let Mr. Ruger or Mr. Smith & Wesson answer knocks at the front door these days……I can almost guarantee that seeing someone prying open my front door and then smashing a window while observing them holding a rifle would have initiated a response from one of the aforementioned Mr’s……..

    1. I have been preaching carry, carry, carry for years and I practice what I preach. Most of the headlines I read about innocent victims getting harmed or killed could have been prevented if the victim had a gun with knowledge on how to use it.

For all the anit’s out there, everyone I know that has a CFP and carries full time never wants to be in a position to kill someone but the thought of one of our loved ones being harmed or killed by someone motivates us to carry and make the sacrifice to blow someone away if they ever try.

  4. At what point will the decent people get the message to “LAWMAKERS”, we have had enough of this CRAP of Home Invasions, Car Break-ins, Street and Store Robberies, and the other Scumbags roaming the streets!! It is time to get real! Our Streets, neighborhoods need to be CLEANED UP! We have had ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Browning is waiting for the knock or window break!

    1. Exactly what is wrong with the world..”lawmakers” aren’t going to save you.  The police aren’t gong to save you…these men are now free to go and try this again somewhere else.

If people would stop relying on government and start putting a few of these scumbags in the local cemetery this behavior would slow down dramatically.

      1. Too much mercy… often resulted in further crimes which were fatal to innocent victims who need not have been victims if justice had been put first and mercy second.

  5. Folks, this is just the beginning of the bad stuff, unfortunately the economy in Maine is making it a BAD place to live just like 90 % of the rest of America, we avoided it for a while, but it has reached our quaint little state ! Keep your gun handy because law enforcement are not close enough to keep you from getting killed !

  6. The time has past to get myself a gun. When the police come they can call the undertaker. Wonder why Augusta refuses to treat these home invasions as seriously as Florida does?

    1. The crime of Home Invasion Robbery is classified as a First Degree Felony and is assigned a Level 8 offense severity ranking under Florida’s Criminal Punishment Code.
If convicted of Home Invasion Robbery, a judge is required to impose a minimum prison sentence of 34½ months in prison and can also impose any combination of the following penalties on top of that.
Up to thirty tears in prison.Up to thirty years of probation.Up to $10,000 in fines.
      Weapon Enhancement
If a weapon is used in the commission of a Home Invasion Robbery, the crime becomes punishable by up to life in prison and will be classified as a Level 10 offense under Florida’s sentencing guidelines, which would require a judge to impose a minimum prison sentence of 66 months in prison.

      1. If someone want’s to invade my home, they wont have to worry about prison time because my Remington 1187 is the “Judge, Jury, and Executioner” at my house.

        1. Nice gun. shoots short brass without jamming. Have had one for almost 20 years. loaded with 000 buck, right beside the bed. Please send them my way when you are done.

  7. Work has become a dirty word and thievery is the in thing. Yes, there are jobs out there, but too many people would rather steal than work for minimum wage jobs which are available. I recall articles about who works in the north woods cutting undergrowth—it is job that no one else wants so migrant workers do it.  In the past, people wanted to work and get ahead on their own without handouts; it did not matter how hard or low paying the job was, people did it to get a start. Today too many people are accustomed to getting whatever they want. Why work when you can rob someone else who has worked? Perhaps, tougher sentencing from the courts would be an incentive to earn honestly.

  8. Pretty bad when you have to call the cops when someone ‘knocks at your door’ at anytime of day.

Not expecting? (maybe a message that a loved one is in trouble/in need of help/been in a crash)

Expecting because of the neighborhood?  Or a rift with others?

I would’ve asked who was there (with trepidation) before hitting the panic button. Expecting trouble?

There’s more to this, folks.  Most people wouldn’t react that way to a ‘knock on the door’.

    1. I agree. 5 am? Across from a store? Seems the likelihood of being seen is fairly high, yes? I am pretty skeptical about this. Too many things like this are followed by another story about drugs or something else illegal. And oftentimes the victim and the attacker know each other. I hope it isn’t the case here and I am glad the couple is safe. But never-the-less, I remain skeptical.

      1. Thanks for the repiy. On second thought, I should have also listed that maybe they knocked to see if anyone was home before attempting a plain burglary and were just scared off.

But this WAS called an “invasion’. The reporters can make it confusing! :)

  9. Generally, home invaders know what they are looking for. Not having small, mind-altering items about that addicts will do anything to obtain is a good way to prevent most modern day home invasions.
