VAN BUREN – Joan A. Dumond, 78, died Feb. 16, 2012, at a Van Buren health care facility after a long illness. She was born June 2, 1933, in Van Buren, the daughter of Patrick and Rose (Ruest) Ayotte.

She was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School. She enjoyed many things in life, including being a cheerleader in high school, was a lead majorette and loved to dance. She and her sisters, known as the “Ayotte Sisters” would entertain by dancing at Gayety Theatre, Van Buren. She was an avid bowler, loved to snowmobile and ride ATVs, and one of her greatest pleasures was spending time with family at their cottage at Long Lake. Early on she worked with her parents and family at their floral shop in Van Buren. She married Leo J. “Joe” Dumond, Nov. 22, 1951. For many years she worked with her husband managing his construction business as bookkeeper for Dumond Enterprise. Joan was a former member of Gateway Snowmobile Club, Van Buren Lionettes, Daughters of Isabella and Van Buren Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by five sons, Ralph Dumond, Douglas Dumond and his wife, Linda, Joey Dumond and his wife, Marie, Rick Dumond and his wife, Lynn, all of Van Buren, and Ken Dumond and his wife, Donna, of Gardiner; one daughter, Sue Ouellette of Van Buren; one sister, Arlene Michaud of Van Buren; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leo J. “Joe” Dumond, in 2004; and by three siblings, Rachel Cyr, Priscilla Demers and Elmer Ayotte.

Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 10-11:30 a.m. Monday at Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated noon Monday at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church. Spring interment will be at the parish cemetery.
