HONOLULU – Lawrence E. “Larry” Danforth, 59, passed away Jan. 9, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1952, in Bangor, the only son of the late Richard and Winifred (Lounsbury) Danforth.
Larry was raised in Orono. He was a 1970 graduate of Orono High School. Larry entered the hospitality industry shortly after high school. He excelled in his chosen career field, working in some of the finest restaurants in Boston, Seattle and most important of all in Hawaii, retiring from The Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort, after an amazing 20-plus year career. Larry was a community activist; ready and willing to take on issues that he felt needed attention. He loved politics and was most generous in sharing his perspective. Larry was an avid outdoorsman. He was knowledgeable and most appreciative of the glorious tropical plants and flowers of the islands. He was often seen biking or riding his moped all over Oahu, Hawaii, seeking out his favorite beaches, and swimming in the glorious blue Pacific. Each year Larry would travel to Maui, Hawaii, and climb aboard Capt. Steve’s boat and go out and pay his annual visit to the whales he so dearly loved. Larry was a devoted Red Sox fan his entire life. He was a dedicated, forever fan of Hawaii Rainbow basketball and Rainbow Wahine volleyball.
His sister, Lynn Marie Danforth of Willard Beach, South Portland, survives Larry. He will be remembered by his Leveille, Gray, Sternberg and Lounsbury aunts, uncles and cousins, and by his many friends. Left behind to mourn his passing is Larry’s beautiful, amazing Hawaiian family – his lifelong and cherished friends from Oahu, Hawaii.
A memorial service in celebration of his life was held in Larry’s beloved Hawaii.
