FORT KENT – Gene “Tunney” McBreairty, 84, died peacefully Feb. 19, 2012, at a Caribou health care facility. He was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Allagash, the son of Melvin and Belle (Hafford) McBreairty.

Gene served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1946 to 1947, having received a Victory Medal. He was a member of American Legion Jandreau-Connors Post No. 180, St. Francis, and the Mason Lodge of Fort Kent.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Clara (Gardner) McBreairty of Allagash; two sons, Gene H. McBreairty and his companion, Diane Clavette, of Allagash and Mickey and his wife, Angie McBreairty, of Fort Kent; one daughter, Rhonda and her husband, Dana Caron, of St. John; six grandchildren, Derek, Andrew, Shawna, Jason, Kyle and Devon; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Melvia Oberg of Caribou and Queenie McBreairty of St. Francis; two brothers, Hilton McBreairty of Allagash and Niles and his wife, Anne McBreairty, of Gilford; several nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by his parents.

Friends may call 6-9 p.m Wednesday, Feb. 22, and 9 a.m. until time of the service Thursday, Feb. 23, at Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. Spring burial with full military honors will be celebrated at Allagash Municipal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to a charity of one’s choice.
