MILLINOCKET – Hugh “Fred” Armstrong, 85, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at a Millinocket hospital. He was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Passadumkeag, the son of Charles and Mary (Wing) Armstrong.
Fred worked for Bangor and Aroostook Railroad for 46 years, retiring in 1990. He loved trains and the railroad life. Fred will be remembered by many as working from a ladder, painting or papering homes, a side job he enjoyed for many years in the Millinocket area. Fred also had a keen interest in learning and an appreciation for reading. He enjoyed traveling anywhere he could, when given the opportunity. Above all else, however, Fred loved his family and spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet (Brackett) Armstrong of Millinocket; two sons, Hale Armstrong and his wife, Rella, of Levant and Mark Armstrong and his wife, Teresa, of Lodi, Calif.; a daughter, Peggy McLean and her husband, Bruce, of Millinocket; siblings, Elizabeth McEwen of Millinocket, Dana Armstrong of LaGrange and Gertrude Murphy of Old Town; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by three brothers and a sister. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Millinocket Regional Hospital for the compassionate care given to Fred and the kindness extended to the family during Fred’s final days, as well as to his many friends and relatives who visited him.
At Fred’s request, there will be no services at this time. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, Millinocket.
