One person was killed in a crash Friday night on the Maine Turnpike and three others were injured when a driver apparently swerved to avoid hitting a deer.
According to Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss, troopers responded to the crash at mile marker 60 in Gray at 11:47 p.m.
The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a 2010 Honda Fit, Megan Stuart, 31, of Auburn, was traveling north when she swerved to avoid the deer. The vehicle hit the median-side guardrail and spun 180 degrees to face oncoming traffic.
A 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, also traveling north, crashed head-on into the Fit, Moss said in a statement.
Stuart was taken to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the Fit, Soda Mao, 38, of Auburn, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the Malibu suffered minor injuries, Moss said.
Police shut down the turnpike to clear the scene for about 20 minutes, and one lane was closed for about two hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
