JACKSON, Maine — The brother-in-law of a missing Florida firefighter had just arrived Tuesday at the last place the man was seen — a house on Hadley Mills Road — when the Maine State Police pulled into the driveway with the man who is a person of interest in the case in the backseat.
Chris Lerch of Florida said by phone that it was painful seeing Daniel Porter, 24, of Bangor get out of the unmarked police cruiser.
“It’s difficult,” he said. “It’s just very difficult.”

Police have said they believe that Porter is one of the last people to have had contact with Jerry Perdomo, 31, of Orange City, Fla. — a firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Seminole County Fire Department — who has been missing since Feb. 16. His rental car was found abandoned at the Bangor Walmart the next day.

Porter, who was identified by state police Monday as a person of interest in the disappearance of Perdomo, was in the police car and his father and another man were in a separate car that arrived at the same time Tuesday afternoon, said Bangor firefighter John Higgins, who is escorting Lerch around Maine.

“We just keep ending up back there,” Higgins said, referring to Jackson. “When we got there nobody was there” except for a couple of television news crews.

“They brought him in there and they’re still there,” the Bangor firefighter said just before 2 p.m., referring to Porter. “We were asked to leave by the officer, so we left. He said they were in the middle of an investigation and asked us to leave, so we did.”

A reporter for a Florida television station, WFTV-TV, Channel 9, approached the state police detective’s car as Porter got out of the vehicle and asked him if he had killed Perdomo.

He never got the chance to answer because the detective ordered the TV crews to leave or be arrested.

Seminole County firefighter Troy Todak, who is in Maine to help with the search for his friend and co-worker, remained at the scene with the news media.

Perdomo, who served in Iraq as a Marine, is described as a 200-pound Puerto Rican male, 5 feet 11 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black zip-up hooded sweatshirt, fatigue shorts and black sneakers.

Authorities collected evidence from the Waldo County house over the weekend, including a rolled-up piece of carpet and other items, and are searching two cars driven by Porter as well as the missing Florida man’s rental car.

Porter and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Cheyanne Nowak, may have been the last ones to have contact with Perdomo, police have said.

At about 2:45 p.m. a black truck with a snowmobile in the bed pulled into the driveway, driven by a Maine game warden. The truck was accompanied by a Maine State Police cruiser.

The Bangor Police Department’s mobile crime lab arrived at the scene at around 3:30 p.m. After officers consulted a map and conferred with the game warden, the vehicle left the scene, heading toward the center of Jackson with a state police investigator in a separate car.

The group, which included Bangor police Detective Larry Ellis and Officer Eric Tourtellotte, and state police Detective Jennifer Fiske, took a left on the Village Road, heading toward Monroe, and stopped after about a mile.

After walking about a quarter mile down a stream-side trail, the group of three stopped and Ellis could be heard saying, “This isn’t it, I can tell you that right now. It’s too shallow.”

Asked what they were looking for, Ellis responded that he couldn’t give any specifics. “We’re trying to figure out if truths are being told,” he said.

Lerch said he can only speculate on what state police are doing with Porter at the last place his brother-in-law was seen.

“I don’t know what they are doing,” he said. “I’m not going to try and guess.”

  1. Sounds like perhaps Porter is cooperating now?  I wonder if he is back at the house with the cops to show them what happened.  Or I guess the police could have taken him there to show him what they found and to shake him.  If Ms. Nowak had nothing to do with this, then I wish her the best of luck in the future, but if she had anything even just helping with a cover-up I hope she at least gets dragged through the mud before she gets a sweet deal for flipping.

        1. Yes.  I am not quite sure how you can come to the conclusion that she may have had nothing to do with this though.

          1. Becuase like you, I have no “official” proof.  However I will say this, if I go with my gut, you and I are on the same page.

      1. no proof of the big bang THEORY and no evidence of how it was initiated

nice to see you have just as much faith as the rest of us…good luck with that

        1. No proof? Nah, just that the universe has been constantly expanding, which is what matter does after an explosion.

  2. I am impressed that his brother firefighters are up here trying to be of some help. Sounds like he was a well liked individual. My prayers are with his friends and family; and each of the people involved in the investigation.

  3. The end of the video is interesting. The reporter tells Mr. Porter this is a chance to defend his son. He replies “I don’t have to. Why don’t you defend your buddy from Florida?”.  Makes me think his son has told him some kind of story.

    1. I think that after being repeatedly asked to leave the film crew and reporters should have been subject to arrest.

      1. Probably it wasn’t a good time for the cops inside to give Porter a break while they go outside to arrest reporters. It won’t surprise me if the reporters get charged. It was wrong for them to do this. They could mess up an investigation (and maybe a confession) acting this way.

  4. All indications are that this story was reported from Bangor, not Jackson. If the reporter is reporting from Bangor, “Bangor” should be the dateline.

  5. Can quickly move through this case, but what is taking SO long to solve AYLA REYNOLDS case?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    1. You can’t just create evidence, motive, facts, etc.  Some cases have them others don’t…well at least not ones that the cops can take to the DA.

  6. Let’s hope that this young man is cooperating and brings swift closure to this case. Everyone deserves answers. I have a feeling that this will be done by the weekend.

  7. my brother is in the news business in florida . wondering if he is covering this. my brother is a maine native he does news videos . he has worked in abc cbs fox nbc in portland me for quite while i can bet he is covering this

  8. This has got to be an excruciatingly hard time for Mr. Perdomo’s family.  So sorry they have been introduced to Maine in such a horrific way.

  9. Having just watched the video, I’ll say this:  that police officer is one of the worst.  I have worked with and know some fine, outstanding officers, and he is a very poor reflection on the profession.  Most are intelligent enough and secure enough to not feel threatened by media people and they know how to handle them.
That officer either needs further training or he needs to find a new job.

    1. That police officer is doing his job.
Winning popularity contests sponsored by the media is not his priority; someone may be dead in a snowbank.

  10. the state trooper showed just how helpful they can be.. but hey it did take two weeks to suspect foul play…soon we will know.. i said drugs from day one we will see.. he sure did have a nice house in florida and a good looking wife.. to drive to maine to cheat with lisa can not be it

    1. drugs for sure, to rent a car and pay for gas would have cost way more than flying.  He wanted to bring something he didn’t want to go through the air port.

  11. Okay, now that I have read Porter was lead away in handcuffs, how was that not included or reported on earlier.  Am I wrong to assume that the video that accompanied this article would have shown that?  The reason I say that is because at the end of the video when they try to interview the father, aren’t the cops and others already gone?  Hmmmmm.

  12. pretty sure we will know all soon. sounds like he is there to show him what went on and maybe where he is . what else would they need a snowmobile for

  13. They just charged Mr Porter with murder as of 5:06 Tuesday the 28th of feb, and i believe two days ago i was accused of exaggeration the fact that Jackson might have its share of unsavory characters ! The victim served in Iraq where the chance of being killed was ten thousand times greater than getting killed in Jackson Maine , yet thats where he was killed HUH !

    1. Seriously????? A husband, father, friend has been murdered and the best YOU can come up with is “I was right! I was right!”  Grow up……

    1. Well it seems the same two reporters listened better to the MSP Detective then the father and friend.

But I think the changed headline above “Bangor man charged with murder in missing Florida firefighter case” may account for the gruff request to vacate the property.

  14. I see this turning into some type of self defense case, not saying it is, but I have a feeling this is the course it will take.  Should be interesting to see how Cheyanne comes out of this.

  15. He never got the chance to answer because the detective ordered the TV crews to leave or be arrested, amazing how much power cops have now a days.  I would have not left if i was the reporter, they could arrest me,

    1. And I am sure that his attorney would have told him to answer the reporters questions too. Any utterance made to the reporter would be used against him. By the way dkenzie the MSP “own” that house for the moment. It’s called a crime scene.

      1. I know its a crime scene, does not matter, any other crime scene reporters would be on sight.  Its because he is from Florida and its a high profile case right now
