KITTERY, Maine — A woman hired to care for an elderly Kittery woman stole more than $300,000 in jewelry, police say.

Jocelyn Dowey, 30, of Rye, N.H, stole the jewelry over time from the victim’s Kittery Point home, according to police.

Kittery Police Chief Paul Callaghan told Foster’s Daily Democrat jewelry valued at about $330,000 was discovered at Dowey’s home on Feb. 26.

Police say Dowey was hired to run errands for the victim a little more than a year ago. She did not work for an agency that provides services to the elderly.

The victim noticed some of her jewelry was missing last month. She told police the value of the jewels she lost was about $500,000.

Dowey was released on $25,000 bail. She’s due in court next month.

  1. Goes to show you that you need to check references carefully. An Agency comes in handy for that.

  2. “Dowey was released on $25,000 bail.”  How did a bail amount get that high? She must have posted the jewelry for bail…

      1. Wiping my kids’ butts when they were young was one thing…………I’ll leave it at that. The ole 8-week CNA course. Was appalled when I went to see my grandmother in a nursing home and one of them had an eyebrow ring. RREALLLLLLLLLLLLL classy. Wonder how many times they really wash their hands in the run of a day or night.

  3. She must of had some pretty impressive jewelry…considering a real real nice engagement ring would run say $10,000 and she claimed to have $500,000 worth.

    1. its easy for a woman with a little money to acumulate some jewerly wealth….when my ex wife moved out.     she lugged out a hockey equipment bag of jewerly and loose stones …not kidding
not sure of the value but it was alot …and it was common for us to still find antique rings in drawers of tables and such …looong after she was gone

  4. when i was a little kid in the 70s … i had a blind elderly relative who had 2 guys steal her purse …cops caught them did nothing … to this day i keep there names handy in case  i run into them ….i even keep tabs on there family members , in case he turns up … i think hes locked away somewhere

    1. i’d be careful what you post online… i’m sure these men deserve what ever they have comming to them, however with that said; i wouldn’t post comments about keeping tabs on  peoples family, and saying ‘if i run in to them”. these could be taken as threats and you could find your self introuble… your intentions seem good but way going about them a little off key… good luck to you =)

      1. no just watchin and waiting …but i think hes incarcerated ….he turned out to be a serial rapist ….cant imagine hed be on the street …i looked as recently as 2 weeks ago ..no sign of him

  5.  Jocelyn, tell the judge you are one of the 99% and you just wanted your share from that 1%er.  It’s only fair, right? I’m sure he will go easy on ya.

  6. Jeb, don’t be stupid. You can do better than that.

Call me,Jocelyn, and I’ll tell you how to make off with $300,000 worth of jewelry. Better yet, lets be “pen pals” and when we get out we can join up and really clean up. Sure beats working!
