DEDHAM – Irene Frances Houston, 77, went to be with her Lord March 6, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 21, 1934, in Bangor, daughter of Harold and Evelyn (Tarr) Hall.

Irene was a graduate of Bangor High School, class of 1952, and was a proud member of the girls basketball team. In 1956 she married the love of her life, David A. Houston. Irene worked as a bookkeeper in area businesses, retiring in 1992. In her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling. She spent countless hours crocheting hundreds of blankets and various items to donate to area seniors, hospital chaplaincy, and the Linus project. Irene also enjoyed making hats and mittens for preemie babies.

Surviving are three children, Donna Smart and her husband, David, of Dixmont, Linda Houston of Dedham and Rodney Houston and his wife, Ana, of Marietta, Okla.; two grandsons, David Coleman and his wife, Sarah, of East Taunton, Mass., and Jeremy Smart of Dixmont; three step-grandchildren, Adam, Maria and Nikki, all of Oklahoma; five great-stepgrandchildren; four sisters, Louise Jackson of Tallassee, Ala., Rowena Petersen of Brewer, Alice Young of Etowah, Ala., and Judith Kitchen and her husband, Richard, of Bangor; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, David, in 2004; a daughter, Roseanne Coleman, in 2006; and a son-in-law, Dennis Coleman, in 2011.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at East Dixmont Community Church, 34 Church Hill Road, Dixmont, with pastor Tim Boone officiating.
